I have been asked to carry out a small repair to a Marklin Great Bear '1 gauge' steam model.

I am not too familiar with these locos but the repair was no problem. I am however intrigued by the mechanism shown in the photograph, particularly the small pivoted cone. It is connected to the regulator and I assume it is some form of remote control from the track?

Also although described as 1 gauge, the back to back measurement of the wheels is 36mm which does not seem to conform to any standard I am aware of.

I would appreciate it if any one could enlighten me

I'd guess it was some way of stopping the loco without having to grab it! It looks like it is set to wor in either forward or reverse, or maybe it is a clever doo-dit to allow automatic reversing so it can run continuously on a straight track?

Surely someone knows the definitive answer to at least one of my questions?

If not, can someone direct me towards a forum that specialises in this type of loco. My Google searches so far have not yielded any results and I am reluctant to register with forums or sites that I will not otherwise use.

            Regards

It looks as if your loco is equipped with oscillating cylinders and if this is the case then I would go along with Neil's suggestion that it is automatic reversing equipment.
