one of the regulars in my local came up to me on friday friend s got a pillar drill he wants gone free picked up yesturday dingy old leanto on back of garage the rust is not as bad as it looks started cleaning it today it stands 6 feet tall 5 speeds on the pulleys high and low gear total ten speeds plus forward and reverse on motor dont make them like this any more very happy with my find sorry photos are wrong way round

What a wonderful freebe. Try a Stanley knife blade on the rusty cast iron, you may find there is not much pitting at all.

Very good machines,before you proceed too far with cleaning check that the morse taper spindle bore is in good condition ,old machines do turn up with damaged tapers and will retain drills and chucks.I once came aross an old Meddings which had the taper machined out to a parallel bore I never did fathom why , as the drill was free it was used for spares and the column was a useful length of tough steel.A machine tool fitter once told me the gears for the hi/low box are tufnol and easily damaged by operators changing speed before the spindle stops,his comment was "I have replaced an awful lot of those gears so wait till the spindle stops" .

Congratulations on your acquisition.

Since my brief sojourn in the Trainee Model Shop in 1955, I've always lusted after a drilling machine with real back-gear. It's so much better for cutting large circular holes in sheet metal using a trepanning tool. For example, making mounting holes for meters in electronic device front panels. I've always been suspicious of belt slip and insufficient available speed reduction with the drilling machines that employ three cone pulleys.

The other thing is that the gears are supposed to be in an oil bath not greased. If the oil seal leaks and you are tempted to grease it use Landrover swivel grease which is formulated as a replacement for oil.

My bench-drill is a Meddings, though single speed-range and chuck only, but I am very happy with it. I often use the table/base as a surface-plate.

That's true I made a Delrin gear for a Meddings MF4 (I think) for someone to replace a stripped one. Actually I made a pair so I have a spare one kicking around someplace that just needs finish-machining.

At least you know what the winter project is going to be.

If you remake any gears out of Tufnol, do ensure that the laminations are the correct orientation. Made from a disc, cut out of sheet should be O K . Rod is a No No, or the teeth will soon shear off.

Don't panic if the taper is u/s as I am pretty sure I have a spare spindle for that model!
