Nice one, how did you restore it to it's current state, wire wheel?

Do you plan to make jaws for it to use?

Yes, wire wheel on an angle grinder. The surface rust cleaned of easily. It was then wiped over with an oily rag (hence the slightly gloss finish) as I have no plans to repaint it now. I did one small repair/modification to make the quick release work correctly, and I will make some jaws when some suitable scraptonium comes my way. For now, it's just sitting under a bench.

I have a Furtis vice that has 10 cast into the bodies, but the jaws are only 4" wide. All the info I can find says No10 vices have 41/2" jaws. Anyone else come across this? Can't work out how to upload a photo yet. When I do I'll add a couple.

The replaceable jaws on yours may have been replaced with 4" jaws and the body of the vice angle-ground to remove damaged parts of the casting and make the new jaws look right. They don't look quite right, though, to me.

Bill, thanks for your reply. I don't think it has been chopped about as the replacement jaws I sent for had the holes in the wrong place and also the casting around the bolt areas look correct.

I have sent my jaws to get some new ones made.

Here is a photo of a serial number I found stamped into the body when I first stripped it down. Not been able to find out anything about it though.

Geoffrey, I'm not quite sure what conclusion to draw from the replacement jaws you sent for having holes in the wrong place. It doesn't seem to me to say anything about the originality or otherwise of the jaws currently fitted to your vice.

The bolt hole areas of the casting won't have been affected if the projecting sides of castings where the jaws go have been slightly trimmed to make them line up with new shorter 4" jaws.
