Hi i have had my lathe about 2 years but i still need some info and wondered if any one can give me some advoise.I have always used 3 and 4 jaw chucks and been ok but now.

      Myford S7.

At the warwickshire ex show last week i bought a ER32 collett chuck for my lathe no problem ( Will buy the er collets as and when needed)NOw the question How would i fit a fly cutter into the collett holder as it hasa tapper as you know,And the internal collett is straight.Plus lots of equip have a tappered morse on one end and i dont know how to fit it to the lathe.

I did consider trying to buy a horizontal holder with a morse 2 taper inside so i can then use tapered equip into the externa straight so i can put things with a tapper on them straight into my 3 jaw chuck ?? Or a guy at the show said why dont you just put things like a fly cutter with a tappered shank straight into your lathe spindel with a draw bar ?? but what holds it into the lathe spindle perhaps another type of chuck.

I know to the skilled lathe man these question must seem stupid but i have looked into a number of books that my family members have bought me but i cant seem to track down the info i need.

          Hello Allen,

Myford lathes come with a 2 Morse taper [MT]spindle socket, so all 2MT taoer shanked tooling with fit directly.

The ER collet holder probably has a 2MT shank on it with a thread into the small end of the taper which is where the draw bar screws into to pull it into tight contact in the spindle socket. It is needed to stop the whole assembly 'walking' out of the socket in use.

ALL sizes of ER socket are intended to grip parallel sided material; if your fly cutter is so equipped you can grip it either in a chuck or the ER chuck with the right size socket.

You can't grip Morse taper tooling in ER sockets

          Does this help you?

          Regards

          Brian Wood

            Hi Allen

The rear end of the taper shank of the flycutter should be tapped. The draw bar is a length of rod with a matching thread which will screw into this – a length of studding is OK. The rod is long enough to pass right through the mandrel and it secured ( by a nut and washer if studding is used) against the back end of the mandrel and thus retains the MT shank in the socket and prevents it flying out. Do not use the fly cutter without the draw bar!

So in this case forget the collet chuck – in any case I don't think mounting a flycutter needs the precision of a collet chuck and a straight shanked flycutter should be OK in your 3-Jaw. In fact I would prefer a straight shanked cutter held in a chuck. There is a danger with the MT one that, if you take too heavy a cut, it might slip with consequent risk of scoring the MT socket .

            Regards

            Norman

              Hi Allen,

Just to clarify, here is a sketch (one of a series) I used to explain to youngsters in school how a drawbar works Hope it helps. If your E32 collet chuck is in the lathe using the same drawbar to hold it you can usea parallel shank flycutter, but as Norman says you can just as easily use the 3 jaw chuck to hold it. The drawbar can be a suitable length of threaded bar – probably M10 or 12.

You can click on the picture to enlarge – hope it helps.

Hi Allen, just a word of caution, if you do decide to use a draw bar[which is a good idea] do not over tighten it! If you do you may have trouble releasing it.

If youcar flycutter has a No 2 taper it will fit directly, if it is No1 then you can get an adapter at the Sandown show

**LINK** (don't worry that the pictures look bit un-tapered

If it is a No 3 although you can get a 3-2 adapter it isn't suitble for a flaycutter really, only drills.

Thanks for all the info that you have all given to me I realy appriciate it.Its great to have queries ansered so promptly.I have now digested the information and I have decided to get a set of 3 straight shanked Fly cutters from RDG for less than £20. Then I can put them into my 3 jaw chuck.Plus I now know about the drawbar method. So once again guys thanks Allen.thumbs up
