        Hello,

Can somebody advise what the correct size is for the replacement chuck key on the Emco 5 compact lathe?

The chuck is the 3 jaw type with a drill type fitment.

I’ve lost my key during a recent ‘clean up’ session in the garage 😔

Depending when it was made Emco used Rohm chucks which should have a model mumber on the chuck. You should be able to look that up and find a suitable key.

You are not alone Patrick, I have the same chuck which I had not used for ages and now can't find my chuck key either. I think my workshop elf must have been speaking to yours. I am hopeful that mine will turn up, but if not, can you post on here any success you have in locating a supplier.

                Patrick

Measure the spigot hole on the chuck and search for a Jacobs K number chuck key that has the same size spigot is a good start point, there may be a choice of 11 or 12 teeth, can't remember which it is. You will have to make and fix an extension to the stem for comfortable use.

I think perhaps they both have been trading with mine. I seem to have an oversupply of the things that I can't match with chucks. You wouldn't, either of you, have seen a 1/8" ball-ended allen-key screwdriver with a blue handle?

Sorry Bandersnatch, I just wish my elf would pinch the odd item from elsewhere but he is just interested in hiding my stuff. Only just noticed he has hidden my 6" steel ruler again.

I found it hiding in the swarf bin….

                                        Hi Patrick,

I have also lost my EMCO chuck key. so I followed up on your information, but drew a complete blank.

The Jacobs#3 series refers only to the key style (thumb flat and handle) not to the part number. The other number I can see on the photo of your key, appears to be the British Patent number.

Is there another part number on the chuck key? Also, Jacobs only appear to make keys with fractional inch spigots. The EMCO chuck has a 7.0mm hole. Has your key's spigot been turned down to fit?

I have bodged something together from a rusty old unmarked key, just to get myself out of jail, but would like to find a better replacement.

                                        Mike

Mike this key cam with the lathe when I picked it up. It doesn’t appear that the spigot has been turned down, they is a very small gap when inserted and the mesh is a little tight. I would say it’s not the original key for sure. Where it came from I just don’t know sorry.

Patrick, I have made do with an old unmarked key of more or less the right size. I needed to loctite a thin brass sleeve over the spigot to bring it to 7mm. I will try not to lose that one as well.

Jason said he thought the Emco 3 jaw chucks were made by Rohm, I will have to follow up that lead.

                                            Mike
