Hello, Im thinking of buying one of the above which has been offered to me at £400. The machine is in very good condition and comes with a vice. Is this a fair price or a bit high ?. I would be grateful for your comments. Regards, Roger Williams.

Well, it is not cheap you will find cheaper. But then you say it is in very good condition and comes with a vice. I bought a Royal ( very similar) that needed some small work and a clean for £100. Have a look at Homework shop, there is a active shaper forum on there.

£400 does seem somewhat on the high side I paid £240 for this Elliott 10M about 4 weeks ago.
The vice that is offered is it a shaper vice? the reason I ask is that it’s not many that come up for sale with their original vices. If it is the original vice it can make a big difference on the price.
I vaguely remember the 10M had a choice of 2 vices one of which wasnt so good.

“Neebs” on the Homeworkshop forum is rather knowledgable on these machines.

I bought an Elliott 10M about 15 years ago. It was in almost new condition ie machine marks on the slides etc. Complete with a very good vice for 300 pounds. I thought that at the time it wasa bit too much but because it was local, the cost of delivery was offset by the price I paid. I would think that 250-300 would be a reasonable price.

              Regards

Normally £400 for a shaper with vice would split £399 for the vice and £1 for the shaper. Unfortunately this rule does not apply to Elliotts. The 10M is a rather good shaper , its vice is pretty useless as a shaper vice. £400 is rather a lot for a 10M unless it has vertical feed (rarer than hens teeth ) in which case snap it up. As others have suggested read Neebs (Adrian Nic(h?)olson ) on the home workshop site , both on Elliotts and shaper vices.

                  G’Day Roger,
I’ve been trying to buy an Elliot shaper here in Australia for years but haven’t been able to find one. I imagine that they are rather more plentiful in England. If I could get one for 400 quid I’d snap it up.
                  Regards

Hello, thanks to all for your interest in my shaper query. Ive decided to purchase the machine because it really does seem in good condition. Is it a disease to keep wanting to buy machinery. ??. Regards, Roger Williams
