el cheapo mapp/oxy sets

I have missed the utility of a small oxy/acet kit many times in my shed and have struggled through with either my big Sievert LPG torch or a little Mapp (bernzomatic yellow) one (or the charcoal forge).

I usually use mig or tig for welding.

The reason that I don't have an oxy acet kit is the cylinder rental is a pain for occasional and sporadic use.

Anyone have any experience with them?

I acknowledge that the teeny 100L bottles at $50 each seem expensive but a "real" setup uses 340L bottles at $110 each plus the pesky rental

Be aware that proper MAPP is no longer manufactured. Instead, a slight of the marketing hand is used. The replacements come in the familiar yellow can along with (suggestive) names such as "MPP" (and probably "MAP Pro" I suspect). However, they burn a lot cooler than the original MAPP and seem to be based on LPG and propylene. To be fair, the Bernzomatic "MPP" substitute sold here in Canada is spelled out as "Max Power Propylene". However, in this case with some oxygen to spark it up a bit you are probably back up there.

BTW, I know you Aussies like to think you are hard but why would you want an oxy-gas kit to solder ("Bromic Oxyset Soldering Kit&quot?

Hi Russell. The kit looks very similar to the one CuP Alloys sell, the TURBOTORCH 90 and can be seen here **LINK**

This is a very popular kit in the UK for soldering and brazing of small components. The replacement cylinders are readily available.

Alternatively we sell the 'big brother', the  OXY/ULTRAMAPP kit, which by changing the gas regulator can be adapted to oxy/propane. The kit is further down the page on the link above. This kit was demonstrated at the Midlands Exhibition last year by Helen Verrall-Stait of Western Steam brazing a small marine type boiler.

just a more modern design of handle and hose. The handle and hose are now '1 piece'.

Otherwise everything as before.

I cannot imagine that the 1000 bottles will be refillable near me. The one and only BOC agent is pretty keen to rent me his bottles by the month.

I wonder why they stopped making the real deal MAPP
