Just acquired a Naerok GP13 drill. Stripped and cleaned all the old grease out but the quill is stiff. Should it be greased or oiled?

There's no play in the bearings and apart from surface rust it was quite clean with good belts, not bad for the few pounds I gave for it.

I have used a few drops of iso 32 hydraulic jack oil on my 9 x 20 Taiwan mill drill quill periodically for years without any trouble, still no play in anything and it all works smoothly. I put some in the top where the splines pass through the pulleys, some where the splines pass into the spindle bearing carrier, and some on the quill OD where it passes through the head.

If you see it dripping out you are probably using a little too much. I usually see a drop forming where the quill exits the head at the bottom.

Thanks for that, would slideway oil be ok?

you're so lucky, my gp13 had a quill that looked like a dog had chewed it and clattered like a machine gun.

Sideway oil would probably be a bit too thick. May well not flow down gap if put in from top and may be scraped off if applied to the assembled quill. ISO 32 or there-abouts seems to be commonly recommended for such duties eg Bridgeport quill.

That said I tend to use Castrol Manga BD68, at the lighter end of slideway oils and also fine for lower speed bearings, on assembly as it doesn't drip so easily as Hyspin AWS32. Hyspin AWS32 and Manga BD68 are pretty much my go to "thin" (bearings mostly) and "thick" (slideways and gears) oils for everything machine rated. Maybe not perfect but work well enough for all except seriously specialist duties.

                Clive.

All a drill quill needs for lube is some is motor oil not the top grade ,some 10/40 part synthetic is ok and readily available ,Thats all the plain sleeve of the quill on my Fobco drill has had since new (1968) Why go to extremes with lots of fancy sounding oils which are not needed,I have used the specified Hydraulic oil on my square head Colchesters as it can be bought easily in bulk ie 25 litres and cheaper than motor oil.The designs of our model engineering machine tools dates back to the 1950/60/s. just think ,millions of BMC engines and gearboxes used the same oil, similarly a lot of motor cycles used straight 30 oil in their gearboxes so why not use motor oil in our machine tools, though I would not use anything lower than a viscosity of 10 w . One oil to avoid on slideways is the so called heritage and classic oils equivalent to 1920/30/s motor oils, they are ok on machine tools where there is no contact with soluble oil, when those oils are used on lathe slides with a pumped supply of slurry the oil stiffens and the saddle does not slide easily, yet there is no problem with a cheap 10/40 motor oil.
