Can anyone please tell me the difference between a Deadlock chuck and a Sidelock  chuck or are they to all intents and purposes the same, that is to clamp a cutter with a single Weldon flat?

As far as I'm aware, a Weldon chuck, as you say takes a cutter with a flat, and retains it with a single grub screw.

The Clarkson "Dedlock" (not Autolock) has an external thread to take internally threaded shell milling cutters.

There is a drawing half way down the page on Tony's site showing a mandrel for holding the cutters for their T+C grinder. Note the spelling.

(Or see Page 19 of This pdf. )

A search on ebay for "dedlock" will show various cutters and chucks. A search for "deadlock" will show even more. wink

Obviously it will vanish with time, but there's a photo of one on ebay, complete with instructions in the box lid.

The Clarkson Dedlock system is obsolete, which is why there are so many chucks, but far fewer cutters, on Ebay. I've got one Dedlock chuck, bought in enthusiasm before I realised they were obsolete. embarrassed Fortunately I've managed to collect half a dozen or so reasonable cutters from Ebay over the years, including this unused one:

Bill thank you very much for the detailed explanation – two very different chucks! And Andrew thank you very much for warning me to steer well clear due to cutter obsolescence! Kind regards to both of you, Adam
