Cut my first nice thread

I tried aliminium for cutting my first thread but it was too gummy . So I thought I’d try stainless . Started of slow and easy and for the last two scratch passes I speeded up the lathe and it worked a treat . I took the chuck off tonight to check what tpi thread it was ,I’m a bit confused because there are two kind of half threads at either side of the full threads and I’m not sure which to count . The thread measured .50″ across and I counted 4 full threads . Am I right in saying the chuck thread is an 8tpi ?

Buy yourself a thread pitch gauge, combined Metric/Imperial, not expensive and takes away the guesswork. A set of Zeus tables is very useful, lot of info about threads, they last well too, I paid 50p for mine but it was over 40 years ago

Hi Sean, as suggested a pitch gauge would confirm the thread TPI but I would agree with you the 8TPI.

If you tell us what lathe you have, someone here will doubtless be able to quote you chapter and verse of the thread specs involved.

This is not a thread to size,this is pick a setting and run with it .

Lathe is Fortis/clausing E/801 /B

Use your 6" steel rule, and if in 1/2" you count 4 threads, that would be 8 TPI.

But do remember that when counting the crests, or the troughs, you are starting at zero

… It's a bit like counting 'fence panels'
