Is there a set of plans for a model?

A good few years ago when going around the NRM in York we came across the little loco 'Pet', and my then quite small kids fell in love, it was a loco on a scale they could appreciate. This is the loco:

It's endearingly ugly and is not the common run-of-the-mill type loco, being the fork-lift truck of its day.

I was curious, is there a set of plans available for a model version of this? I realise 5" gauge would be only 1:3.6 scale and a 3.5" gauge version would be 1:5.1 scale, so it'd be a pretty big beast, but it's a fairly simple lump and might be fun to do when no other jobs are pressing. There are a couple of drawings in the Camden[?] book about the history of the Crewe Works, but I was wondering if anyone had fully worked the design out to a particular scale.

Does anyone know if it has been done and/or if there is a design available? (Always easier then working the design up yourself!)

        Regards,

        Richard

Hi Richard, maybe this book would be helpful to you?

I'm sorry I can't work out how to rotate the photo the correct way up.

It's a L&NWR Society publication, and whilst it is primarily about the Crewe Works railway, it has a huge amount of detail on the locos -including Pet- with drawings and detail photographs.

          Regards,

          John.

            Hi Richard

I toyed with the idea of modelling Pet and bought the book it has a works assembly drawings in it with enough details to enable you to produce the drawings for a model I actually did some preliminary sketches and planning I toyed with the idea of using the sweet pea marine boiler, but that is as far as it got.

Good luck with your project it would certainly make a unique model

John, that was the book I've got, just thought it was published by Camden (but couldn't remember) as it's the same format as many of their publications. I know I got it from Camden.

I realise there are sufficient drawings in it to work up a design, I was just wondering if anyone had. It looks like there probably are not, so it's going to take a bit more work. Though, in comparison to the work involved in making the engine, it's not really significant. At least it's one project where there are plenty of reference photos on the web if you can't remember a detail or find it on the works drawings. It is a shame, though, that the original is so far from being in a running condition.

Being on such a large scale for 3.5" or 5" gauge, it should have little difficulty in pulling an adequate load if it ever got on a public model track. The problem is more likely to be keeping the axle load within limits.

              Regards,

              Richard.

Was it not done in either ME or EIM as a loco being used in the Guiness brewery ? Probably a couple of years ago

I don't think the article would have been about one of these, because all 4 of this class of engine worked their entire lives in the Crewe works, and were scrapped in 1935 when the rails were ripped out. Only Pet was rescued and the nameplate of one of the others (Daisy, IIRC).

If the book referred to above is correct, then they may have inspired a number of similar engines, but I don't think any others were built to the original Ramsbotham drawings, because the design of these 4 was rapidly superseded by better(?) designs. Though a working life of 50 odd years indicates a pretty good design to me. I will see if I can trace the articles though.

                  Regards,

                  Richard.

The Guiness brewery locomotives are completely different to those at Crewe Works. Different designer, different power transmission system.

There was a partial construction series on the brewery locomotives in Model Engineer, but I suggest that the series, such as it is, will be of no use to you for your project.

                    Regards,

                    Phil

                      I stand corrected.

                        Hi Richard.

Have you contacted the NRM search team at York to see if drawings still exist. I was researching an unusual one off locomotive and was told that no drawings existed and there were only very few photographs.available. I did the rounds of all known publications turned up very little useful info and eventually almost at the stage of giving up the project , I contacted the NRM by e.mail who were most helpful and within about a fortnight came back with a list of over 20 of the original works drawings that no one else seemed to know existed. I was able to spend a full day up there and view them, make all the notes and dimensions needed and you can buy copies if you wish.

Give them a try I found them to be really helpful and friendly.

                        good luck.

You know, It hadn't even occurred to me. blush

I might well do that. I will confess to an aversion to Yorkshire though, more on behalf of the poor sods who live there than the fact I don't like place itself. I've been on holiday to Yorkshire twice & there were severe floods both times. Our first trip we stopped near the river Usk, which rose 8ft in the next 4 hours & flooded half the campsite we were staying on, Fountains Abbey was closed 30 minutes after we arrived due to the deluge that started 5 minutes after we went through the gate, then we wanted to go to Scarborough, and the campsite we wanted to go to was on the front page of the Daily Mail, a full page photo showed the inshore lifeboat rescuing people from their caravans. We then went to York to see the NRM, and the campsite we stayed at had the Ouse lapping at its walls, when it should have been 100 yards away. In the city, all the river boats had been sunk because their painters weren't long enough and had held the bows under water as the river rose.

We went back 2 years later, hoping to see the same areas again without the floods. Only every part of the holiday was repeated (except the photo on the front page of the Daily Mail). In our last campsite, the owner said 'We've been here 30 years & it's only flooded this badly once before'. We knew, we'd been there then too.

So, we've taken the hint. Yorkshire weather doesn't like us, and to avoid innocents suffering collateral damage, we've not returned.

                          Regards,

                          Richard.
