Brought back to earth by Mrs JohnMC, they must think you look old……

My grown-up children have taken to calling me 'Pops', and – during a recent domestic crisis – I found I was no longer Alpha-Male. My world has gone from 'Help, what should we do dad?' to 'Would you like a cup of tea?'

        I'm enjoying it!

Just a point of emidemiological pedantry…

Intuitively, one might predict that the disease would spread through the population such that the number infected rose exponentially with time. But it should not, because, as the number of infected increases, there is an increasing probability that an infectious person 'tries' to infect someone who is already exposed. I don't know how significant this reduction may be, but any prediction based on exponentials should be challenged – it only 'works' if every contact is susceptible.

          A little crumb of comfort?

Get my weekly bits and bobs before 9am on a sunday at Lidl because everyone is in bobos

            Not today

            Today is september 3rd 1939

The whole place looked like those soviet union shops in the 1970s, right down to the lonely jars of pickled gherkins on completely stripped shelveing

Plenty of fresh fruit and veg though

Standing proudly in the bare aisles was a lonely mountain of hope… a bogroll mountain

Got the last two mayo and tunnocks wafers at 8.30am, phew

standing in the queue the checkout guy called out

"I can only sell you four luv"

Turned around to a woman who had loaded about 60 bottles of bleach onto the conveyor, you should have seen her face

Only a year to go, keep calm and carry on

I popped into our nearest Lidl last night. It was Gherkins I wanted <g>

Guy at the till was being chatty – telling me about 2 attempted shop-lifting episode – by the trolley load.

As for 9am on a Sunday – round here you'ld need a crowbar that early

Yes, when it gets to the stage there are more infected persons than uninfected floating around, the curve will cease to be exponential and start to gradually flatten out. It's the bit in the middle the WHO and the worlds' leading countries' chief medical officers are worried about. Social distancing, travel restrictions, lockdowns etc etc etc are the means used to keep that early part of the curve as shallow as possible and stop it going vertical.

Today's good news: According to The Australian newspaper yesterday, three Australian scientists have created a vaccine that is already at the laboratory-mouse testing stage and is expected to be ready for first human trials mid-year. The article says the big question then will be do they delay for the usual further human trials or go straight to mass production? Same issues as with the previously reported Canadian vaccine being quickly developed.

My guess is that political pragmatism will overcome scientific caution and the vaccine will be fast-tracked into production ahead of the normal testing time. Plus there is the factor that someone stands to make a vast fortune out of producing vaccine doses for 7 billion people ASAP. Somebody somewhere is going to pick that ball up and run with it.

..wht these things typically plot out as a bell curve. My math isn't good enough to draw it out but reducng movement and contact numbers will flatten it out.

I'm still at a loss to understand the universal greed for bog-rolls!.

Certainly in the UK (and, probably, worldwide) there is a surfeit of suitable material poured out daily by our newspaper publishers. The 'war-time spirit' of 39-45 brought into play the 'fold into 4 and cut, with a hole inthe corner for string' process. Not, perhaps, as soothing as the latest triple layered quilted, pretty-coloured product touted by the hype merchants, but it worked satisfactorily for 5 or 6 years, and has the extra satisfaction of the product being suited to its content!

One crumb of comfort – of sorts – this morning. "They" are considering asking all over 70 year-olds to self isolate for four months "to protect themselves". Think of the number of models you could make with four months uninterrupted access to the workshop! Perhaps we could aspire to the sort of production figures Jason Bellamy attains?

From this morning here all bars, restaurants, night clubs, sports halls, churches, etc., are closed. All shops except food shops, pharmacies, and tobaconists are closed and us over 70s are being told to stay at home and not allow visitors although we are allowed to go out to buy food or or medicines.

                        We live in interesting times!

So if I'm self isolating how do I walk the dog? Surely if I stay more than 2m away from other people being out in the open air is not a problem.

As for pgk's reply, Sunday the Lidl near me the car park was full at 08 45 am, I don't like or shop there but a bit more civilised at Sainsburys, the shelves where full except for toilet rolls.

Question why are toilet rolls on the hit list, will the virus give us diarrhoea ?

Are Lidl gherkins better than Waitrose?

A subjective answer – Yes (and probably cheaper – certainly for me. Lidl is 15 miles away Waitrose is 43miles)

In DILLIGAF mode here, will not be going shopping until I actually want something by which time I am sure the stores will be resupplied. Bit of a drag having to go shopping as Sainsbury’s have no delivery slots until 3rd of Aprilsad. The supermarkets are having a bumper time at the moment, I suspect it could be followed by a bit of a lull while people work their way through their stock of toilet paper and pasta.

Further to my previous post about the over-70s possibly being asked to self-isolate, the recommended spacing between individuals is 2metres or 6 feet – though it doesn't say whether that's horizontal or vertical!
