Compound Marine Cylinder Lubrication

I'm using a displacement lubricator on my 1 1/2 + 2 1/4 x 2" compound. Question.. will sufficient oil be passed to the LP cylinder in this configuration.? Many thanks.. Geoff.

hi geoff,

a very good question!

oil doesnt disappear in the cylinders – it forms a sort of emulsion which then gets carried via the exhaust. the LP cylinder will have saturated steam with the oil emulsion mix from the HP cylinder so will be perfectly ok.

No problem to have displacement lubricator connected to compound steam engine. You can see the oil getting out of the LP cylinder means the displacement lubricator is working well.

Thank you Gentlemen for your advice.. I have made an upscale of a Stuart Turner lubricator that seems fine.. Mine has an internal reservoir of 3 1/2 high by 7/8" bore. It holds an ounce (25 Ml) of 600w grade oil. The final exhaust seems a tad greasy so I'm reasonably confident that all is OK.. Cheers.. Geoff.
