Sean, this is a pic of Negative and Positive inserts. Negative CNMG in the centre, Positive equivalents either side.
Left hand side is a CCGT12 designed primarily for non ferrous metals and plastics. They also work well on steels but are more fragile, although with a good make [ like these ] and care will last quite a while in steel. They generate the lowest cutting forces of all the common inserts.
Right hand side is the CCMT 09 again a very versatile insert with low cutting forces
Middle is a CNMG Negative insert, note the difference in the cutting edges.
Going by the size of your machine the CCMT 09's would be a good size of versatile insert. You can turn and face with the same insert without altering the toolpost., and you can even get toolholders that will allow you to use the other 2 unused corners.
You should always buy good makes of inserts ie, Walter, Arno, Sandvik, ect. Just learn up about the different grades for different materials. Plenty of info on the web.
cheers
