Sean, Just for your info [ in case you are not aware ] a CNMG insert is a Negative insert and as such there is more cutting force generated than there is for the Positive equivalent CCMT. They will work ok on the smaller lathes, although the Positive inserts are better suited.to smaller machines. [ you might have a bigger lathe, I don't know ] Just something to bear if it's a small [ ish ] machine.

              cheers.

Thanks Raymond,What do you class as a small lathe .This is a 12" swing 20" between centers and a 1hp motor . Interesting point on the negative and positive rake on an insert/tooling

I think everyone would have a different idea of "small " I would say the lathe you describe will be happier [ and it will be easier on it ] with Positive inserts, far less cutting forces. The CNMG'S will work ok, but they do generate higher cutting forces. For example, a depth of cut of say 1.5mm , the forces generated by the Positive insert will be far less than those generated by the Negative insert for the same depth of cut. On me Warco GH750 which has 3 hp and weighs approx 600 kg I use positive inserts, but on the DSG I use a mixture. Positive will certainly be kinder to your machine.

                  cheers.

1.jpgSean, this is a pic of Negative and Positive inserts. Negative CNMG in the centre, Positive equivalents either side.

Left hand side is a CCGT12 designed primarily for non ferrous metals and plastics. They also work well on steels but are more fragile, although with a good make [ like these ] and care will last quite a while in steel. They generate the lowest cutting forces of all the common inserts.

Right hand side is the CCMT 09 again a very versatile insert with low cutting forces

Middle is a CNMG Negative insert, note the difference in the cutting edges.

Going by the size of your machine the CCMT 09's would be a good size of versatile insert. You can turn and face with the same insert without altering the toolpost., and you can even get toolholders that will allow you to use the other 2 unused corners.

You should always buy good makes of inserts ie, Walter, Arno, Sandvik, ect. Just learn up about the different grades for different materials. Plenty of info on the web.

                      cheers
