with all that wonderful knowledge out there I was wondering if someone could recommend a supplier of mill cutters that are good quality and reasonabley priced. I know there is a lot of talk about how important it is to get quality cutters but from who ???

      Cheers guys

Bit of a subjective issue really….quality and reasonably priced…..

Well fwiw, my money goes to Arceurotrade…..no particular reason only that I know Ketan doesnt sell rubbish and has a good rapport with his customers….

Usual disclaimer, just a happy punter buying from from Arc…..

I use the 3 flute HSS Al TiAIN coated end mills from Arc, they cut well and last a reasonable time and give a good finish. I have used some of their carbide cutters and they seem good as well.

We use Cutwel at work – seem to give a very good price/performance balance, wide range of sizes & next day delivery. Worth signing up for their e-mail alerts to get forewarned of the special offers ( buy 2 get one free or BOGOF often on HSS & carbide milling cutters).

I've been quite impressed by MSC's milling cutters who can supply M42 cutters at reasonable prices if they're on offer in one of their flyers – See **LINK**.

Irritatingly their prices are ex-VAT and their cheapest postage is £5 though, so beware.

…and gawd only knows why they feel it necessary to send a second invoice which perhaps explains why their postage is OTT.

They have a bit to learn from Toolstation IMHO but good otherwise.

I have been very satisfied with several orders of cutters from http://richontools.com/ – I think I may have first found them from this forum: They have a good range of cutters etc, and prices are much lower than UK. Several delivery options depending on how fast you want it : delivery is at a significant price in relation to the basic goods price, but the overall package is very good..

Remember you could be liable for VAT and import duty (and administration/carrier surcharges) for any orders above the duty-free allowance of £15 for goods imported from abroad. I have not yet incurred this (on a modest number of orders), but you may not be so lucky.

I generally use Chronos. However do not ignore RS, they are competitive and their next day service does not fail.

Do not use any dealer that supplies a cutter, or tap, or die, loose. That is not in its own "container". Just remember, tool steel is brittle and needs to be protected. [This is a case of once bitten twice shy except when buying at a show].

Dont know about milling cutters, have not needed to replace any yet,but something else came to mind.

Recently,I went looking for a thread gauge to grind tool bits for Acme threads,no big deal you might think. Wrong ! I was unable to find a supplier anywhere in this part of the world,so I went shopping on the Internet. These gauges seem to be quite common in America and I found one place,I think they are called "Shars",who told me that "Yes sir,you have come to the right place,we can supply your gauge for only $8.99 if you buy online" I thought" Fine, that will do grand, but lets just check about postage,or "shipping" as they like to call it,so I did.

Surprise, surprise, "Yes sir, your gauge is only $8.99 and the shipping cost is $35 extra". I said "No sir,I only want to buy a gauge, not shares in the company" Perhaps they were sending it by Pony Express and the high cost was to feed the horse.

A friend found another supplier on Ebay ,in China, who sells the same thing for $6.50,with little or no shipping costs, although it does take a bit longer to get here, but so what?,how often do you use something like this,so you will have it for years.

So the lesson is,look before you leap,or check before you order, else you might get a surprise.

Does anyone know where I could get a "Keats" angle plate of a size to use on my 6" lathe?

From experience the Chinese one will get here the same time as the American one and without the fees for handling by Parcel Farce.

If you had posted here you wanted one I could have sold you one as I still have stock from when Ower Gert {TM} used to sell them and make in the UK to boot.

Also have gauges for trapezoid thread that I believe no one else does.

If anyone wants stuff from Shars just e-mail them for a carrage cost rather than use the web generated price, last item I got for $19 shipped rather than $165 what the computer said, came within a week.

Neil posted the other week of a couple of UK sources for Acme gauges and think he has done a test on them in latest MEW

Back to milling cutters. upto 6mm I tend to go with the FC-3 ones from MSC at about £3 when on offer and that is just about all the time, 6-16mm ARC Premium HSS for good work and for things like castings that may have hard spots the Richon ones it does not matter if you blunt one at their prices.
