Bench Grinder

Hello Everyone,

I recently purchased a bench grinder.

The type that has a grinding wheel on the right hand side and a wire brush on the left.

On each safety cover is a sticker saying not to install a grinding wheel on the wire brush end.

Can anyone enlighten me as to why

Hi Daniel,

It would help if you posted additional info and maybe a photo.

Physical size, wheel size, motor output and the type of mounting on the brush side etc, would help contributors on the forum to advise you.

A stab in the dark. On my grinders the RH wheel is secured by a RH thread and the left hand by a LH thread. I am guessing that your grinder is RH thread at both ends in which case a wheel fitted on the LH side, it being heavier than a brush, is likely to work loose – ouch! ………Rik

When I read your problem I came to the same conclusion as Rik – both ends have the same handed nut, so if a wheel is fitted instead of a brush the nut may unscrew.

I was also thinking that it would be to do with left and right hand threads.

But, then, I don't know if being hit by an unscrewed wire brush, flying at warp #10, would be any better than a grinding wheel

I did wonder if there was any other reason.

Could the wire brush side be threaded M14 to take screw on brushes? If so this wouldn't be suitable to mount a grinding wheel.

Have you removed the guard and put a spanner on the nut to find out ?

Would not the same risk apply to a brush ?

Have you actually checked the threads to see if they are R or L handed?

Another reason for the instructions stating that a grinding wheel should not be fitted is perhaps the lack of large dished washers. The brush mounting may not need these because of its metal hub but the grinding wheel needs them to spread the load.
