Axminster Engineer Series CQ6230A-2/910 Lathe –

I recently did a course at the Axminster Skill Centre and was pleasantly surprised to find that the Chinese bench-top lathes we used on the course (Sieg SC4 I think) were capable of producing accurate work. I also found all the Axminster staff to be very knowledgeable and helpful.

Anyhow, much as I was impressed by these lathes, for my current project I need something bigger. I currently have a Denford Viceroy – which is great, but also too small. I've been looking for a larger ex-industrial machine for a while, but nothing has come up that suits my budget.

I am very tempted by the CQ6230A-2/910, not least because it comes with a DRO and a good range of accessories, which appear to make it good value for money too. I was wondering if anyone on here has one of these, and if so, what your opinion of it might be?

Very similar lathe and £600 cheaper delivered to your door. Someone may be able to comment on it.?

I have no connection with either company. I know nothing about either of these lathes therefore cannot recommend any of them.

I have had one for 3 years, and really like it. Because the chucks don't thread on you can happily run in reverse for parting off, and I was able to get a 5C collet chuck for it too.

The only problem I have is stuff less than 3/16" can't be gripped by the chuck which mine came with so I have to make little collets or use the 5C if I have one of the correct size.

But the separate carriage/cross-slide feed so you're not wearing your leadscrew out is nice, as is the ability to reverse the feed.

Not having to mess about with belts for changing speed is also great.

The only thing I'd like to know is what the screw thread on the non-chuck end of the spindle is so I could make a handle for it.
