Hi, does anyone know if people still use shapers as have my late fathers Atlas Shaper sat in his workshop and need to sell or scrap?

A very desirable piece of kit in my opinion, definitely not for scrapping!

uses of a shapiung machine, produce a flat mirror like surface, cut gears, racks, splines and keyways, cut slots, vees and dovetails for slides etc etc, and all with a lump of hand ground HSS. Or you could use a milling machine to do it quicker, after spending hundreds of pounds on tooling to do each job. Not fast, but very versatile, cheap to buy (comparitively!) and cheap to run. I have an Alba New 1A 11".

Check out ebay for prices, very sought after

A decent one is 4 to 500 notes

It's a 2 to 3 man lift into the back of a hatch, they are semi-portable and do a great job

I have a version of the Atlas 7" Shaper Andy – and it's a very nice machine to own, although a heavier machine might be better for anyone with room for one. Mine was delivered by the seller in the back of a small van – and he lifted it out of the van with an engine hoist and then moved it into my Shed on a dolley all by himself. So it doesn't need a large truck to move it – although it is still 300lbs plus (without the stand) – so whilst it might fit in a hatchback it would probably cause the rear suspension to sag a bit!.

I'd suggest you place an ad on here and see if anyone would like it – I think you will probably find a willing buyer…

                Regards,

                IanT

Albas are nice too Andy – and you get at least another 3" of stroke – but it will probably weigh a bit more too!

Depends which Alba it is…I have a 10 inch and an 18 inch, but there is also a 14 inch model…which I had but passed on to a friend. There may be others too for all I know!

Can you let me have some idea of its size if Simon declines.

                                Hi Brian,

In terms of size do you mean, physical size or the stroke? I am not sure how you tell the stroke so hopefully it will be on the data plates. I have photos, but not worked out how to attach them to post, so if interested I can email.

                                Andy
