      Hi Michael,

I didn't name the product as I did not wish to publicly criticise a particular firms product, indeed I made a point of saying how good it is but just that I cannot understand why it is so costly.

Thanks for your link, much appreciated.

      Cheers,

      Martin

Tubalcain on youtube has done some rust removal videos recently, he used molasses and it appears to work. A bit slow but it appears safe.

I have tinkered with electrolytic rust removal and it works well, spotted an article that emphasised not to use bicarbonate of soda but soda crystals. Curious as to why i had to try it and it still worked. Took a bit longer but fine.

The big problem is its an instant rust magnet, blink and the part is rusty again.

PS. which edition did you review it? Thanks

I've used sodium hydroxide, but I was doing it again I would use soda crystals.

Derusted an old iron wheel I used as a pulley for my Suffolk engine with the last of the Evaporust. It wasn't too rusty, to be honest, but I think it just about exhausted the solution.

Left it very dirty – I suppose the rust dissolved leaving graphite dust behind, it just wiped off. Nice grey finish, like a new casting!

Have bought a small bottle of the evapo rust to try out as parts of my ML7 are showing light surface rust. Do you think it will work if wiped/sprayed onto parts and left?

I doubt it. Evapo-Rust recommend total immersion.

I recall they recommend spraying large objects at regular intervals over a bath.

I would have a go and be prepared to repeat the exercise a few times, nothing to lose. Oil it after you wipe it off as it will be very clean and vulnerable to re-rusting.

Let us know how you get on (before and after photos would be good).

You could soak a sponge, or cloth in the Evapo rust, and lay that on the part. This is similar to a method that can be used when using the electrolitic method of rust removal, with this the other electrode is placed on top of the wet sponge(washing soda solution).
