Well – at the risk of being a turncoat.

There are a lot of old wives tales doing the rounds that need debunking – badly. And then there are things propounded by some of the experienced which, from a brief examination of the forces and geometry involved are simply impossible.

So there’s fault on both sides, but the solution IMO is to put one’s own points cogently and effectively and hopefully win friends and influence people. On three occasions recently I’ve had people counter points of mine with what has to be the most arrant rubbish, (to the point that I’ve been astonished that people actually believed what they were writing – morse tapers spring to mind) However, when needed the cavalry seems to ride over the hill. (Unbidden and all! which is perhaps a good sign.)

I’d therefore suggest to DW, that he takes a deep breath and just backs down a bit. A sniveling apology would be good, but all of us would accept a bit of (high) reverse gear. Then for the future perhaps he might choose to put some sound points across more kindly.

At the end of the day if you draw flak, you are not getting your point across. And Donald one has to accept that, on these forums, you can take a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink. That the sane have to live with.

Hi mgj, your analogy with the cavalry reminds me of my first teenage years. I’m 3 of 6 siblings, when I was coming up to being 13 we moved house from a quiteish area to an area where there were a lot more youngsters of our ages. We slowly got to know our new “friends?” but being still kids we used to squabble amoungst ourselves and take sides when out playing, and of course some of our new found friends would butt in and started aggressive abuse to one side or other. Well that was it! how dare they talk to our brothers/sisters like that. So we were then banded together again to fend of these outsiders picking on our own kin. Once they were seen off on thier way we then resorted back to our own squabbling where we were interupted.

Needless to say the 5 of us who still survive don’t squabble like we did when we were kids, but do have some differences of opinion about various things, but are adult enough to accept it and voice our opinions in an acceptable manner without trying to be king of the hill. But still won’t tolerate others throwing abuse to any of us, we band together like a cavalry to fend off any unacceptable aggresion.

            Regards Nick.

              Hi Donald,
I’m sure you mean well, but if you want people to listen to your advice you have to treat them with a bit more respect. It is rather analogous of the old saying “if you want to be heard, speak softly” or the same thing from another perspective “only someone with nothing to say has to shout”.
This forum has many characters of widely varying skills and abilities, you should never assume that they know nothing because there will always be someone who knows more than you. If someone asks a question, no matter how daft, offer advice and be prepared to back it up with reason, not just “do it this way!”. If people know why they should not do something, then they will learn. The basis of any education is “first principles”, with first principles on board you can make informed judgements. Being told not to do something “or else”, is only for children and matches.

I will not apologize for any name calling I may have indulged in, you behave like a berk you should expect to be called one.
As I said to start with, I am sure you mean well and I look forward to hearing something constructive from you in the future.

                Gray – thankyou.

Nick – of course, and time buys one some cred for talking sense. Which is perhaps a point which DW overlooked.

Terry – you will have to forgive me for saying that the first half of your post was rather more worthy than the second.

And for those that care, I’m in high good spirits – having run the TE all this pm, I have learned not to pop the safety valves. The mods to the slide valve, mean its running beautifully, loadsa power and no priming. Finally I have got the injector to work properly – or learned to drive it. For an injector that was dead reliable all last year, this one has been mighty feminine.

Jeff, Yes that is the same Michael. although I am not going to get into any discussion about politics, I have enough crap to deal with here as it is!
John S, since the gloves are off and you started with the personal stuff and I am reluctant to lower myself to your level I will make an exception, Your head is so far up your a**s that your almost inside out.
ady, Grovel I have nothing to grovel for even if I did, I do not do grovelling, apologizing yes but no grovelling.
Some earlier poster to this thread [I think it was Terry Thomas] said that the truth always hurts well I feel just dandy, but it must be me that has touched a raw nerve here.
Now I think I will go do some milling using a drill chuck, after all it should be ok as long as I keep the cutting forces down!!
                      Donald.

This has to be about as puerile as it gets.

We’ve had 4 plus pages of quite futile vitriol, and neither side has made its or point or even an impression. Whats going on now has become IMO, about as unpleasant and adolescent as it gets. It’s reminiscent of a primary school playground.

Best thing would be if someone showed some leadership and actually deleted the whole thing, and then we could all go away and return somewhat wiser.

Donald – that post was unwise -ady was only joking.

Don’t worry Donald, milling in the jacobs chuck has been covered quite well.
In another forum, half the posters here would have been stood down for a week, while some a wee bit longer, we don’t need that to happen here. Ian S C

He is probably thinking right now, “what an unfriendly lot these amateurs are” and gone to find a forum where he will be more welcome than he is on this one.
