Of late I am getting quite irritated about some of the (I suspect younger) members of the forum. Their atrocious English just makes me wince. For example they use ill for I will, not even an apostrophe before the ill either! There seem to be no end of like examples.

Now my English isn't all that brilliant, so maybe I am not the one to talk! However things like the above do make me cringe, quite literally.

I suspect that there might be others who think "Truly there goes a miserable old git" and to those people I do apologise. It takes all sorts I suppose. Maybe, ill, is a texting abbreviation, but then I never abbreviate when texting, maybe that shows my age.

      Andrew.

I was taught to speak, read and right proper and I do expect others to do the same, I text queens English with all of the necessary punctuation in the correct place and if my daughter, 37, sends me a text I ask her to do it again if its it text speak on the basis that I don't understand.

I think we should form a club of old gits.

Small mistake – surely you meant to type: 'I think we should club a form of old gits.'

I don't know. Only you can tell me if you're getting an old git! Can you order them on the internet? In that case I'd like too get an old git too.

Perhaps you meant you're getting to BE an old git?

Perhaps I have graduated at last into the club, school, society or gathering of old gits; whatever the grouping is called, having passed the magic age of 80 which surely allows me bragging rights if nothing else worthwhile!

I've shown my colours now, how about the rest of you?

80? Your only getting old! Theirs another one or too, maybe (or is that ‘may be’?) even free, or for or 5?

Split infinitives might be another, as are double negatives.

Also just have to remember that mobile phone user’s dont have a propper key bord. The apolostrafy fing (the comma up in the air) requires won extra key operation at leest.

I think that at our age(s) we should be allowed to be an old git if we so wish.

At 70 I feel that if we fail to correct these errors then the youth of today and tomorrow will miss out on the joy of language.

I've recently acquired a new fountain pen and now enjoy, once again, writing letters to friends and family using writing paper and envelopes. I think that they are appreciated by the recipients too.

It's a two way street. I suspect (apologies if I'm wrong) that I'm one of the younger forum members at 38. Someone called me a Tyro the other day and I had to look it up on Google to check it wasn't insulting!

The english language is forever changing – some might say evolving but you cant stop it ( I see no point in putting the apostrophy in cant for example). Of note was a printed sign in Halfords in the camping section advertising "Sleeping bags and pillars", truely cringe worthy.

                                        It's not the years, it's the mileage…

I think one of the benefits of increasing age is the ability to say no, with increasing vehemence, and speaking your mind, a lot…

Andrew,be very careful where you thread [in case you put your foot in it ], I drew attention to this very subject some time ago and was roundly attacked by several members for my trouble..It seems that correct English is not spoken or written anymore, indeed I find it difficult to understand much of the posts on this site, and many of them from English men.! I might add that I am not English,I,m Irish, and proud of it,but I do like to hear and see English delivered correctly. Grammar seems to have died years ago and spelling soon after, and as for "Texting",I regard this as a form of laziness, and never respond to it. It reminds me of an old friend who referred to drunks trying to talk,as "Talking shorthand " Same thing !

Perhaps the way to deal with Texting would be to send back something even more stupid, although that might be somewhat difficult.

Just look at some of the posts, and replies here and ask yourself "Is it just me"?

Yes,you are right to get annoyed, there is no excuse for it,all these people went to school,at least I assume so,therefore the question is,did they learn nothing ? If you cannot speak and write your own language, what then ? Stick to your guns Andrew,I,m right behind you. There are only a few of us left and we are vastly outnumbered.

PS Keep your head well down,I expect the return fire will be heavy !!

I see no point in putting the apostrophy in cant for example

The point is that without the apostrophe, can't becomes cant which means, "hypocritical and sanctimonious talk, typically of a moral, religious, or political nature".
