      Hello Joe,

I have a simple hinged pivot for my alba1a I hinged the motor from the bottom & on the r.h. side I have a lever rather like a reversing valve gear lever & I've never had it creep when disengaged, I have 2 rollers opposite the motor pulley to keep the twin vee belts clear.

      Graham.

Thanks for all the comments and encouragement from everyone! It is quite a job, and a messy one at that – maybe 60 or more years of grease, oil and grime to get rid off!

        Rik,

Tthe video is great! That is the size shaper I was trying to aquire, but , especially in my part or the world, beggars had better never aspire to choice! Rik, you say no vibrations..in your video, when the heavy cuts start, if you look at the shaper table, where the horizontal top meets the front vertical (white) section, and keep your eye on that, it looks as though the table is rocking up and down – is it the entire shaper rocking, or the camera, or the table rocking on the column V-tails, or my eye…

        Graham,

That is in lieu of a clutch mechanism I presume? I was considering that, but the 2S has a double V belt, and I am concerned that if those belts grab a little…

          Joe,

You're right to be concerned about it not being a positive clutch which positively disengages the drive, I can honestly say it's never happened with my shaper, mine has twin vee belts & I put 2 rollers adjacent to the motor pulley to guide the vee belts so as to keep the belts clear of the pulley when disengaged, the hand lever's adjustable so you can get the right tension/clearance, I don't know how to put photo's on here but if my son comes up I'll try toget him to,– Shapers you either love 'em or hate 'em, I love my alba & elliot, bought when you could pick them up for £50, I sold an adept no2 for £18 & thought I did well as I bought it for £10.!! you'll love it.

          Graham.

Joe – I see what you mean about the rocking. I am not sure whether it is an optical delusion or whether I forgot to lock the table foot and it is rocking slightly on the vertical ways, It's been to long now and I cannot remember. All I can say is that with the table support foot locked I get no "rocking" even with a good cut. Pity the foot was not "in shot".

            Have fun.

My Shiny 'new' ALBA 2S starts to appear..

Everything has been painted ( except the Connecting Link and Self Act link – they snuck off while I was painting and missed the event…-Anyway, they won't be used since I am fitting steppers..)

Assembly is well under way, as seen in the pics. Parts all fit nicely and everything turns smoothly – still a while before powered cuts can be made though! Lots of little oil cups to be made, oil wicks to be found, the new motor fitted, the vice needs new jaw plates, and lots more!

              Everything primed:

              And All Painted:

              Assembly in process:

A little different from when it arrived…

                Some Questions…

What steel material/grade could I use to make new vise jaws for the Shaper's vise? The jaw face pieces are 200mmx60mmx12mm, but are in bad shape – the vise was used as a welding vice, among other things..

Also, the wick material I found in the ALBA's oil cups were pipe-cleaners – I see this is used by many folk, but do pipe cleaners work that well as wicks? Not easy to get any sort of wick here in Namibia, although paraffin lamp wick is available – a sort of cotton waste material, long thin strings in a loose rope maybe 4 or 5mm in diameter, but very loose- strings easily removed to make the rope thinner. Just not sure how one gets the floppy wick down into the feed pipes whose lengths vary from a few cm to maybe 10cm. Soak the wick in viagra for a few minutes..??

Mine isn't bolted down, I put some folded up thin rubber matting under the feet and it made a huge difference

Once you have a shaper going then making a vice, or fixing/trueing up a vice becomes a complete doddle, the world really is your oyster

Looking very tasty with its her "makeup" applied Joe. Be nice to see a video of it working when you have finished. A shaper with steppers? – Would that be a first I wonder? The mystery of why visionary Alba named this model "2S" is finally solved – it means "2 steppers" yes
