Seen the Red Arrows flying in two formations of five going roughly south over Cottesbrooke in Northamptonshire at 9.50 this morning flying quite low about a thousand feet at a guess.

        Must've been a great sight & sound !

Last time I saw a flight was at Armed Forces Day, needed a long telephoto lens though:-

They've flown past and landed here at Farnborough.

A team from New Zealand is in the US at Reno, their aircraft is a WW2 Russian Yak-3, I think it has an Allison engine, it is number 35, and known by the name FULL NOISE, and is flown by Graeme Frew, and is currently in first place in its class (unlimited) ahead of a couple of Mustangs at 345.277 mph. I think they are using their number 2 engine, not the full race tuned one.

The Yak moved up to the Gold class, after winning the silver, racing against 4 Hawker Sea Furys, And several other hotted up aircraft, they would have come 6th, but copped a 16 second penalty for missing a pylon. the aircraft that got the place was a T Mk 20 Sea Fury "924" running a 2500 hp Centarus engine compaired to the Yak 3 with a 1300 hp Allison. Graeme did win Rookie Of The Year, prize $US 1000.

The number on the aircraft is 35, this is a tribute to Burt Monro (fastest Indian).

Interesting ! Thanks for the post…..

As you probably know, there's a fascinating vid of a RAN Sea Fury on YouTube at a German air display !!

It has supposedly the Wright engine rather than the Bristol.

And…."The Fastest Indian" ~ definitely one of my favourite films.

Some of the Sea Furys have Wright R-3350, or the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engines. An interesting one I'v yet to look at is a Mustang with a RR Gryphon. Some of these AC a able to exceed 500mph, and all this speed is at 50/100 feet, not at the thousands of feet one usually think of a fighter flying at.

spirit.jpgdsc_5471_01msig.jpgSome pics of the Yak-3 at Reno. The top one is a photo shopped one, Burt's streamliner Indian.  The Bike on the left is the 1350 cc Indian ridden by Lee Monro at Bonniville earlier this year, at which time they found that Burts record of 183.59mph was wrong, and it's been revised to 184.087mph. Again, thanks for that latest post. Is that actually Burt in the P/shop insertion ?

Apologies that idleness prevents me searching for whether this has been covered before here, but I've always been fascinated by the controversies about which was the fastest prop aircraft during WWII (ignoring hi-speed dives). Surprisingly (to me) given the date and other claims, this is noteworthy:-

“One of the highest recorded instrumented Mach Numbers attained for a propeller aircraft is the Mach 0.891 for a Spitfire PR XI, flown during dive tests at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough in April 1944. The Spitfire, a photo-reconnaissance variant, the Mark XI, fitted with an extended 'rake type' multiple pitot system, was flown by Squadron Leader J. R. Tobin to this speed, corresponding to a corrected true airspeed (TAS) of 606 mph. [11]

There's another De Haviland twin Merlin, wooden aeroplane on the restoration line in New Zealand, and it's not a Mosquito, it's a DH 103 Sea Hornet, I don't know it's condition, or the timetable, but it's on the way.

Mrs Dave and I were sitting in the sun at Old Warden airfield this morning, when one of the staff called out "would anyone like to help push a Hurricane?". Well, it would have been churlish to refuse! A dozen of use Strolled over and gave it a shove out of its hanger & onto the airfield. They were going to fly four of their aeroplanes to Duxford for tomorrow's air show.

                            Dr Dave,

You have reminded me of something I used to do, first off I was fortunate through the ATC to take my Glider Pilots Licence at Swanton Morley where not only did we learn to fly but we also had to marshall the gliders, prepare them for launch and recover them. Move forward several years and marriage and my wife and I would park at a local Glider club just to watch and if it was during the week I would get asked if I could help moving the Gliders and at the end of the afternoon I would get offered an Aero tow in a glider as a thank you, we would go regularly and often gave a hand followed by a ride.

                                                  Ooopsie!

It didn't look that hard a landing, the wingtips didn't touch the ground. smile o

But the pilot bogged up the lateral control big time. It didn't look like a particularly strong crosswind approach, so it isn't clear why there was a bootful of rudder just before touchdown, which then caused some spectacular tyre squealing lateral excursions. Let's hope the cost of the lost rubber wasn't deduced from the pay packet.

Been there, experienced that. Although I'd like to make it clear I wasn't the pilot at the time. Merely a passenger in the Auster, idly wondering at which point the undercarriage was going to collapse.

Re. the 380 arrival, the engine pods look to be too low slung to allow a 'wing-down, forward slip' approach, so he's kicking off drift but … ummm, slightly over enthusiastic.surprise However, as a demo of just how tough the 380 gear is, that was quite remarkable. I think I might have wanted the techies to do a VERY thorough after-flight inspection, mind you!frown
