      As a novice to milling, I have a question about the Warco VMC mill or the WM18. I think I am veering towards the WM18 because it looks right. However, it does not have a knee to raise up during machining. It does though have the facility to lower the head via a graduated handle. So what I am trying to ask is can you use the head lowering in the same way as the knee raising to machine something. Thanks,

          Basically yes, benchtop machines use a moveable head instead of a knee.

          They are sometimes described as 'mill/drills' although most aren't particularly convenient to use as drilling machines.

            Much prefer a mill with a knee and a drilling type quill, gives you the best of both worlds. Had a VMC years ago and found it a good all round machine.

              Thanks Neil, that's one issue sorted.

              Does anyone have an opinion as to the better machine, VMC or WM18. Like I said I think I prefer the WM18 but I am not sure why.

                Well I would have to disagree with Neil and say that quite a few bench top mills make very good drilling machines. Unlike his X2 if you get a machine where the head can be raised or lowered in much the same way that the knee is raised or lowered plus a quill that can be fed like a drill by the arm at the side then you have a very good and easy to use drill. Add a DRO and you also get a very accurate drill. Since I got my X3 about 10 years ago I have hardly used my bench dril for actual drilling of holes, it all gets done on the mill.

                The WM18 has the quill feed so you will be OK.

                  For all practical purposes its 6 of one – half a dozen of the other. Moving head or moving knee gets you to the same place although the most appropriate machining techniques to be used may differ. Probably the least important consideration when choosing a machine.

                  Larger table and travels of the WM18 are attractive but rotating head of the VMC has certain advantages and may well compensate when it comes to workpiece coverage. Never used a small turret mill so I don't know. Bench mill lets you keep you standard under bench storage system, which can be considerable advantage in a small workshop, although it does put the top of the machine rather high. But then you don't have to stoop to look at the table. VMC plinth can be quite space inefficient.

                  Went through the same exercise many years ago comparing VMC against a Chester Lux style machine. Ended up with a one off Lux type with VFD drive and two speed belt transmission that worked well enough. Despite going round and round many times I never did decide which would have been best from pure machine considerations. VFD drive and bargain price swung it. By the time I'd added a proper DRO set and one or two other refinements what I had was very similar to a WM18. I see no reason why you'd not find a WM18 a capable and satisfactory machine within the limits of the design compromises inevitable in meeting a sensible price / performance ratio. Sneaking suspicion that the head and column may inherently be a little less rigid than knee style but you probably shouldn't be making cuts hefty enough to notice. I never had any stiffness issues.

                  I moved on to a Bridgeport because the bench mill was too small for much of the work I do. Not aware of any specific disadvantage or advantage of the knee relative to moving the head.

                    Had my WM18 now for a year or so and am very pleased with it. Added a power x axis feed which totally transformed using it, made it a pleasure to use.

                      Yes, same here. I’ve had two knee mills, currently using a VMC which has been very good.

                      I’d choose the VMC again any day over the WM18 but it’s a personal choice. I’d used several Knee mills before I bought my first one and knew I’d hate a mill with a moving head. If you haven’t used a mill before though you may get on ok with a WM18.

                        Thanks for your input everybody. I think I will probably go for the WM18 due to it being a slightly smaller overall unit and space is at a premium. With a DRO and table feed it should fit the bill. I will hopefully be working on anything up to 5" gauge loco size and so size and power wise it should do the job. I stand to be corrected of course.

                        Also as mentioned above, I have not used either type so I have no experience to fall back on and will make the most of what the machine has to offer. However, I will not be making the purchase for a couple of months so plenty of time to change my mind.

                          One thing that occurred to me some time ago is that I’ve never needed to lock the knee on my mill when making a cut, I just raise and lower the knee as required. There is considerable mass in the machine. On a moving head machine I’m thinking it’s advisable to lock the head before making a cut or can anyone confirm otherwise? Just interested more than anything else. By the same token I never move the quill when milling (to preserve rigidity) only the knee. The quill only gets moved when using the mill for drilling. Being able to rotate the head and swing it side to side on the VMC has been very useful over the years. Not as good as my old Omnimill but still very useful.

                            I generally lock the head but if he cut is not that heavy it can be left unlocked on my X3.

                            Quill locked for milling and again try to not have it extended but do if the cut is light. MY Z-axis DRO scale is on the head if using a built in basic scale then you will be extending the quill to put on a cut so it will be extended.

                                Theoretically, the rising knee machine is a better design because putting on a cut involves a screw forcing the table upwards against gravity and is foolproof. Putting on a cut on a falling head machine basically involves taking away the screw support and hoping the weight of the head causes it to follow. In reality I doubt it makes any difference at all as the falling heads are heavy enough. That was the argument which persuaded me in the end to go for a VMC and I've had no regrets. The only caution I'd give is that if you have a small workshop bear in mind that these machines are much smaller in the showroom, or at a show, than they are when you get them home. With either type you need enough space for the table to move fully to L & R without fouling the walls. With the VMC you need enough space to be able to stand on the R of the machine to get access to change speeds.

                                  Norman, that is a really interesting point about taking a cut with the head working downwards. I am guessing that there has to be a small amount of backlash in the lead screw. For light cuts I am sure it will work fine but what about plunging a 20mm cutter into something like stainless steel. Would the cutter sit on the surface momentarily and then jump down into the cut as it takes up the backlash. Or maybe I am just over thinking things.

                                    Here's my take on the subject. I used to have a bench-top mill – an Amadeal XJ-12 300 – smaller than the O.P.'s choice of WM18, admittedly, but the principle is the same. Being inexperienced, I sometimes forgot to lock the Z axis feed when taking a cut. More often than not the head would drop and ruin the pass. Not a ruined part, however, unless it happened to be the finishing cut. I upgraded to a VMC when we moved back to the UK. I find it much more twit-friendly and as it's along a side wall of the garage, I have no problems with access all round. I wouldn't go back to a rise and fall head after using the VMC for two years or more. I fitted power feed to the X-axis, DRO and glass scales to all three axes and a digital scale to the quill. Blooming marvellous!

                                    Whatever you decide to buy, I'm sure you will have a great time with it. Enjoy!

                                      On several occasions I’ve needed to drill a hole in the end of a long bar. I simply clamped the bar vertically on the back edge of the table against an angle plate and then swung the head over above the workpiece. I also did this once or twice on my old Omnimill which articulates even better than the VMC.

                                        I did consider adding that mills with a separate quill are easier to user as drilling machines, but there's still the issues that a dedicated drilling machine typically has a table that is much quicker to move around (including rotating on some) but most conveniently – they have a hole in the middle of the table which makes clamping simpler and deep drilling less nerve-wracking

                                          I have a WM16 which is very similar to the WM18 under discussion. When taking a milling cut I don't lower the head to increase the depth of cut. I set the initial position of the head and lock it then use the quill fine feed mechanism and digital readout to lower the cutting tool.

                                            If you have the budget for a VMC then maybe you should also consider the GH Universal as a slightly bigger WM18. I rather wonder how often the vertical and horizontal axes of the VMC help compared to the problem they introduce of moving under a cut and setting square.

                                              You cant trust a head to drop just by dialling a cut size. I had a mill/drill by Warco and earnt a lot of money off it. Warco was excellent in their service back then and overall i was very pleased allround.

                                              But drop the head by an indicated 20 thou and maybe get a 15 thou cut. So you are still up on size so you put the 5 thou on and the machine drops the 5 thou plus the 5 it didnt do last time. Its a common senario and not usually a major problem. But, if you had a knee, oooooooh the extra confidence you gain.

                                              If you can afford it get one with a knee.

                                              Look round for a lightly used second hand one of better quality.

                                                  I believe that the Z axis on that model is a rack and pinion which has a distinct backlash problem which can be fixed with a gas strut and I would recommend a DRO fitted to all three axis. I have just fitted an M DRO set to my smaller version and it has made it a magical piece of machinery.

                                                    It now feels like the Knee is in front by a short Head. laugh I have just looked at Warco's site again and noticed that they also do a variable speed VMC. very tempting. I may have to dig a bit deeper into the piggy bank as this will hopefully be the only mill I will ever need.

                                                      Slipping belts on the VMC is really no bother at all to me but I know some like variable speed so the new model VMC is attractive. Good luck with whatever you decide to buy. Next you’ll be asking what milling vice to buy … smiley
