Hi I've looked at a atlas 10 inch is it normal not to be able to reverse spindle rotation how would I overcome this

Rob, Older lathes were not fitted with a reversing switch, so you will need a suitable reversing switch, depending on the motor, I imagine it is a single phase machine so you would need something like the Dewhurst switch fitted to many small lathes. Bear in mind the chuck could unscrew itself when the machine is reversed.

That's to reverse the leadscrew, not the spindle.

A Dewhurst switch will do to reverse the spindle but a 3 phase motor and inverter drive will be better. That's the best modification I've made to my Atlas and makes cutting metric threads much easier.
