trying to buy something off ebay using mobile phone, it says I must update to latest app, but latest app won’t work on Android9, and my phone appears to be too old to update to Android10 (Huawei Y6). I’ve had to go onto PC as I try to avoid Amazon as much as possible.

I don’t mind the new ebay system,  it makes people more likely to post your items quickly to get paid, I personally won’t stop using it,  it’s great for old unique items you wouldn’t find elsewhere,  I just received some V blocks from someone who said they weren’t marked with a makers mark, so I took a chance hopin20250306_14380520250306_14381520250306_15342620250306_15344620250306_15354420250306_15355720250306_15381320250306_154157g they weren’t some old eastern junk, after removing the 40 year old grease turns out they’re a good old English maker,  got a pair good size brand new V blocks,  there’s nowhere online you can find bargains like that, the waiting to get paid is a bit annoying but it won’t stop me using it.

Also got this extremely rare old Brown & Sharpe auto punch for about £17 a while back,  too good to use.

Even has the original instructions inside.

And bought this Brown & sharpe surface plate square for £53, it’s in superb condition. A quick look on US ebay shows they sell for around 250 to 350 dollars depending on condition.

Also took a chance on this 1000kg crane that up for £800, looked good quality,  so bought it for my flatbed pickup build,  emailed the company that builds them in the uk,  they sell for £2700 with vat, there’s some good bargains to be had if you keep your eye out.

Hi Duncan. (ref: “buy something off ebay using mobile phone, it says I must update to latest app, but latest app won’t work on Android9”)

I only use my PC to buy from ebay, using Google to access their web site. Can you just use Google on your phone to do the same, instead of using an app ?

I do OK on ebay both buying and selling. A recent bargain was a Mitutoyo Series 950 Pro 3600 digital level / protractor. Barely used and pooly described becaus it was part of a kit for test the angle of attack (stall) vanes on aircraft. Only £12.95 including shipping 🙂 That’s a current model that sells for around £600! I might even be able to sell just the jig for the AoA vane and make a profit.
Last year I picked up a Hilger & Watts autocollimator for £80.

I don’t like the new “no fees” format though neither as a buyer or seller.

                        Robert.

I was reluctant to buy a new phone but I am very pleased I did because the difference between my old Alcatel and the Samsung A15 I bought, somewhat ironically, brand new on Ebay for £99 is almost planetary. The Samsung is probably old hat by now but if it serves for another couple years before I upgrade again it will be money well spent.

If you are using an older Huawei ‘phone, it is almost certain that you stopped getting any security updates on it long ago, making the device more vulnerable to attacks. Personally, I would rather bite the bullet and replace the device with something newer that can be updated and allows that use of up-to-date apps. Also, there are several apps that do not work with Huawei ‘phones or that require work-arounds to do so.

These are the reasons that I replaced my Huawei with a current phone: security upgrades and ease of using popular apps. It was a nice device to use, but security became a concern.

                            James.

Pete, those V block are one of the very best that were available, cannot remember the guaranteed tolerance but it was less than tenths !  I would say the best of the best !

I have a set but not in as good condition as yours

Going back to my original post, I found that Huawei phone wouldn’t communicate with new W11 computer either. #2son, who is a computer wizard reckons the only way to make it work is to turn off some very important Microsoft security thing, so I’ve gone out and bought a new phone. Looks like US software providers have got it in for Huawei. Can’t say I blame them.
