When I built a Dore Westbury mill about 30 years ago I used such a drill for the entire project plus a rather poor Perfecto lathe. The type with a ratchet feed are excellent and if your right arm is not strong enough a hole can be gradually opened out up to about 5/8″. The type with a flywheel on top which rely on a difference between flywheel and spindle speed to create the feed are much more difficult to use and only seem to work when there is resistance to the point of the drill. It was almost impossible to open out a hole once drilled.
One very useful application is that when the work is very large ,the drill can often be clamped to it.

My Dad has one of those, and he only got it about 10 years ago.
