I have made a batch of small parts most in EN1A and four odd ones in EN36.

Can these all be case hardened together ? I intend to take them to a proper heat treatment company, been trying to speak to someone there but can't get passed the receptionist on the phone ! She keeps telling me someone will call back….

I do not know what part of the country you are in but i am about to make a new rope cutter for my boat. I intend to call in to a firm in Benfleet Essex tomorrow to ask them what is the best material to use. Plus what is the cost & if they will do the heat treatment. I was intending to use gauge plate due to its consistent thickness. I have the old cutter as a sample of what I want.

PM me a picture & i might get the chance to ask the question for you assuming they let me through the door !!!!!

I am in the Midlands, I used to use a place about 15 miles away but they have stopped doing the process. Found another place about 20 miles away but can never get to speak to anyone on the phone. I intend do drive over and call in tomorrow with the work, I will post what answer they tell me. One concern is getting a minimum order value charged for each steel on what is to me the same process.

                Chris ,

The Midlands cover quite an area , are you close to Dudley at all , if so I can recommend a place that treated the leaf springs for my locomotive.

They are professionals , did a wonderful job at the sort of price we appreciate, and I have no connection with them other than having once used them .

                David .

D.A.G. I am north of Lichfield. The place I am going to try is in West Bromwich. A few years ago I had a choice of several in West Bromwich/Smethwick/Tamworth and Birmingham. Seems like since I retired from engineering most of the places have gone or stopped doing the process. I will be in touch if the place I go to can't do the job or is silly on cost.

Went to Wilson Engineering in Benfleet today. The chap could not have been more helpful & did a Rockwell test on the saildrive cutter I was copying. He pronounced it to be as "Soft as s..t" & that is why it has worn so much against the tufnol bearings. He has confirmed I can make the new one in Gauge plate & he will harden with absolute max of 10 thou distortion over 150mm on 6mm* 100 plate, which is acceptable

He has a minimum charge of £ 68-00 plus VAT & can do your items in one go provided one of them is not leaded steel. That would mean 2 separate items. He also lost me when he started describing 2 processes of hardening for those 2 steels.

But if you have someone to go & see already then you will have solved the issue anyway

Well today I drove over to the heat treatment place and got to see the man I had been trying to contact. Yes he could do the job but £80 plus VAT is more than I am willing to pay. These are spare parts for my vintage motorcycle that I have made whilst it is in pieces. I may never need them but useful to keep on the shelf.

D.A.G. I will pm you re the place in Dudley. Chris.
