Work related so sorry. The object in the photo is called an Indi Square and we use it to check the squareness of a part relative to its mounting surface.

I need another one and contacting tool suppliers they have both offered height gauge but i doubt it will be that accurate. We calibrate the Indi square to 2 tenths over it 12" travel. Any ideas anyone,

There is no doubt a height gauge will not be good enough you will have to pay serious $$ or use a cylindrical 'square' or similar.

A quality height gauge would be straight enough, but will lack the fine adjustment for the squareness. I wonder if a base could be made incorporating the adjustment for a height gauge to mount on?

I disagree, a height gauge is not designed or manufactured to use as a top quality squareness comparator, my opinion others will maybe differ. .0002" over 12" is going some.

Maybe not as you say, but it could be checked at the desired top and bottom heights and adjusted to be true at those points. Thats what that granite square is there in the picture for.

You are correct, providing that squareness is needed to be checked in only one place. On YT, both OxTools and Stefan Gotteswinter have shown versions that do this.

On the other hand, if you need to sweep from top to bottom checking squareness, then the height gauge may not be good enough.

At that rate, paying the duty and VAT from the USA for another indi-square would be a consideral saving.

Here is the square checker I used and still have. They are bottle squares and the biggest at work was about 8 inch diameter and about 2 feet long. With a touch of engineer's blue they can check to within a few tenths if a thou. Here are my three diferent sizes I still have.
