            Hi Harry

Looks like a bit of early watchmakers kit a lathe -known as “watchmakers turns” Turning done from the hand tool rest with a graver.

            Regards

The device in http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f164/boots_n_braces/036.jpg is a lathe. The round bottomed pulley shows it may have been powered by motor or a ‘hand engine/drive’. It looks homemade and was probably used to rough turn the ends of pivots. Watch makers do not generally use nose closure collets. It couldm also have been a lathe to turn turn lace makers’ bobbins.

Watch maker’s ‘Turns’ are usually have two ‘dead’ (non rotating) centres. The bow string passes round the work piece. For the most delicate work an out-rigger pulley is fitted and the bow string just touches the work.

              Best Rgds
