Jolly good, look forward to some more updates on the HOG.

        .

The casings came back like new. smiley The external bolts have also been sent away to be cleaned and replated.

The only concern is when boxes of parts from an engine stripped by someone else lands is. …….. 'Is everything there'.?indecisionfrown

As Stephanie is away working in various parts of Europe for a month the lounge seems an obvious place for engine building. ………. 'innit'.!!!! smileywinkdevil

What did I do today, after an awful Summer I eventually found that the bees had some honey i could take. The weather and temperatures during the Spring stopped the bees collecting a honey flow from fruit tree blossoms, then, when the Bramble flowered we again had inclement weather.

The final source of honey was then Ivy, not every ones choice but honey nevertheless. So today i went through 4 hives and extracted just two boxes of 12 combs in each box. One hive had no surplus honey even though I had bought an expensive Queen to replace an old one. sadly disappointed there. ( I want my money back)

Back home I set to and uncapped the combs and put them through the spinner and filtered the honey into a tub to settle and de-aireate overnight., It will be bottled tomorrow. and I estimate about 50lb. much less than I normally get (circa 150 to 200lb)

Finally I understand what was preventing the bathroom soil pipe from flowing and flooding the path at the side of the house with buttwurst and curry sauce.

Greedy tree roots had found their way into a buried inspection cover in the bushes at the front of the house. Under the mat of roots (about 6" deep) was the sewerage pipe. Luckily the builders mucked in to fix it. It's a s*** job but somebody has to do it. I've never been so pleased and excited to flush a toilet before….

I've been unable to work on my Burrell-Boydell as it will be at Forncett Industrial Steam Museum in Norfolk on Sunday 2nd Oct 2916 for the miniature traction engine rally and so I had a look at jobs that could be started independently.

I decided to start on the water tank which hangs below the boiler and, having a search around the workshop, found a piece of engraving brass that had once graced a department at the local hospital and recorded its opening by proffessor somebody or other.

I used to work for a sign company at one time and 'won' the old nameplate when it was replaced by a new one. It's a piece of 1/16" X12" x 24" and is engraved but the engraving will end up on the inside!

Well, it gives me something useful to do.

I have been constructing an large fixed steady for my Myford.Today I have been milling the three slots in the 6" * 5/8"*1/2" steel ring the slots are to take the existing fingers from my standard fixed steady. They will only reach from 4" down to 2 1/2" ,this leaves a gap down to 1 5/8" so I am making long fingers with ball races attached then I will have all sizes up to 4".I have allready made the base which the ring is bolted, the rebate is radiused to take the ring.I will be able to make a larger ic engine now.

On Wednesday I took the boat to Ramsgate for the last trip of the season. Whilst crossing the Thames estuary 6 miles north of North Foreland I saw a ship approaching from the east. Turned on the plotter to see its AIS fix & get its closest point of arrival to see if we were on collision course. I could not understand why its icon seemed right by me rather than 1.5 miles away. Then it dawned on me that there was another ship the size of a block of flats 200 feet away approaching from the west behind me & i had not seen it . A quick change of course & a wake up call with tightening of b.m cheeks followed. I know I was not looking but it seems that very few of these ships ever post a watch because I have had 2 near misses this year & several over the years in the English channel where ships have changed course towards me without apparently seeing me first. My nearest was 3 years ago when a container ship missed me by less than 60 feet in mist.

Sailed back today. Left Ramsgate in pitch black at 04-00 hours winds 25kts average for a lively 10 hour sail home & something to remember for the winter whilst the boat is laid up. Glad to see that my replacement milling cutter has arrived from ARC ( see other thread on milling cutters) & tomorrow I will have a go at machining on this confounded milling machine of mine to see if I can actually sort my machining woes.

Sam L 1 , your mention of N Foreland and the 'halfcrown/sixpence syndrome' brought memories of a filthy mid-winter day in the 70s returning from a 6 week test flying sojourn in a Wessex. Had an engine fire warning half way between Hook of Holland and N Foreland and it remained on after the bottle was blown!surprise To add to our miseries, we were suspected of being foot and mouth contacts and Ag and Fish wanted to quarantine us. Long story short, we ended up on the clifftop at N Foreland being hosed down by the local Fire brigade (that's US personally!, NOT the aircraft) in brass monkey temperaturescrying

I have just received an email telling me that the Asian Hornets nest in the area around Tetbury has been found and destroyed by the team of bee inspectors, This was very worrying as it is the first time they have been found in the UK. The team will stay in the area for another week to ensure there are no more Hornets to see.

Just to re-cap, the hornet specializes in destroying bees, decapitating them and taking the body back to it's nest to feed grubs. So fierce are they that the bees will stay in the hive frightened to leave and will over a time starve to death. They can defend against singletons by what is called 'Balling' and over heating the Hornet. Prolonged attacks by multiple Hornets always cause the demise of the hive.

My old work mate asked if I would like to go to a mainly agricultural auction that had lathes and tools so had a day out there.

A good collection of stationary engines one went for £660 plus another horizontally aposed twin marine type went for £70.

A small JAP OHV generator I was interested in until turning it over and think piston missing and camshaft not working the rockers,

But bid for a Alexandra tool grinder on wooden stand and won it for £35.

What type of collets are used in them there was three one had no slots in it.

Also there was a bracket the same colour but not sure if for the grinder it's shown in the lower of the photo any ideas.

Did a bit of a clean up on it I will strip it later and check it over think a clamp has seized but should be easy to sort.

Could do with a manual on it are there any downloads available.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

                                  HI Clive

Must be something about good old Blighty seems like every bug and his brother is trying to get over here, there has been a fair bit of stuff about hornets on the tv & u tube over the years but never any thing on our own native hornets

I have only seen one short clip which i caught by accident a good few years ago now, it was on one of Bill Oddys programs, in the palm of his hand he had a queen hornet and her malel consort, and yes they were alive and well

They were huge bigger than the Asian ones and according to Bill O stingless. as far as i can remember the program was shot in Isles of Scilly, the reason i remember this when i was about 5-6 years old my dad used to take me fishing, one the places l liked best was a lake a few miles east of Lymington on the Hampshire coast.

On this occasion we had been there for about twenty mins when he went back to the car for something he had forgot`en (the car at that time was a Jowit Kestrel so you can see its all a good while ago now) anyway while he was gone these two flying things showed up, they were the size of female stag beetles but they were not beetles, also they made no noise when flying, they stayed around for a good five minutes but of course they were gone by the time my dad got back, i told him about them and he said i was making things up i said i was not, i could see a thick ear would be coming so i shut up, but i know i saw them

Well the long & short of it is if any one knows of or finds the film clip with Bill Oddy holding two bloody big Hornets please let us know…………..b

Im guessing what i saw was the courtship flight of a pair of mating hornets

Yes, I know about bloody hornets. As a nipper in Singapore one dropped down the collar of my shirt and stung my shoulder.

The Cutter grinder is an Alexander machine which I am familiar with, it is used to sharpen Engraving cutters, also can be used to sharpen small 6MM milling cutters. There should be some metal templates that fit on the tool holder so that indexing of the cutters can be done against a stop. 4 flute and another for determiningg the setting of the engraving cutters for clearances.

It looks pretty similar to a Deckel TC/engraver grinder, which is what many of the Chinese machines are based on. I know Deckel manuals are available for download online if you google around. My mate has a Chinese Deckel clone and it will do endmills etc. It's all in the attachments, which can be made if you have the manual to get the idea of how it all works.

                                                  Windy,

You can access a pdf copy of a manual for the "Universal Cutter Grinder" here – http://www.c-n-c.cz/download/file.php?id=42001

.This is the generic Chinese type, but includes instructions for milling cutters and drill bits.

As its a pdf you will get the usual "Open or Save" bar at the bottom of the screen  – this always throws me, as I wait for it to appear!

Thanks Robbo have downloaded it I have stripped the main body of the Alexander there was some light corrosion.

The part that was a bit awkward the clamping pad that holds the tool holder assembly to the main round bar had seizes but a bit of ingenuity had it all free again maybe a reason it was in the sale.

The wiring on the motor was perished so will renew and see if motor works if not I have some of the correct speed motors will have to look for a suitable switch as well.

Could do with some more collets but not sure of the type yet and who supplies reasonable priced ones.

Did wonder if could convert to ER ones like I have done on a Quorn but maybe space on the Alexander is a bit limited.

Always nice to have a new toy to play about with it makes a pleasant change from the flash steamer.

                                                    Alexander grinder strip.
