Flying Fifer, you must be Navy/ Fleet Airarm, the T22 was theior machine, T11/T55 was the land based aircraft. Not sure how many Vampires flying in NZ now, at least one T11. There is also an ex Swiss AF Venom, a couple of Strikemasters, anumber of othe jet trainers, and a Hawker Hunter.

Can I remind people of the Aircraft – General discussions thread rather than clog this one up too much if you want to talk planes please do it there.

Been picking up the 'trolley' for the bandsaw I picked up last week. Only the wheels worth keeping. But he had found the fence and some very rusty blades. Even I'm pushed to think of a use for old rusty bandsaw blades and there is a skip just down the road…..

                To whom it may concern,

I am well aware of the thread Aircraft General however as Danny had posted his piccie of a Vampire as an "Aussie Venom" I thought it only right to answer on the same thread. Cos if I had put it in the Aircraft Thread someone would have read it & thought to Himself " WTF is this ijit on about "

If you have a dig around on this site you will find quite a few answers on various subjects which have got sfa to do with the thread they are on.

Having spent all day in the workshop (the advantage of being retired) I`d only come in for some nosh & a quick butchers on this site.

Danny, you`re right 20 odd years with FAA followed by 9 AAC & finished up with the RAF. 1956 to 2004 & yes I would do it all over again.

Busy fettling some brass fittings this afternoon when a familiar sound beckoned. Exited the workshop and would you believe it – it was that b****y Vampire again. teeth 2

                    Jason,

thanks for describing how to broach a D shaped hole, I've wondered how they do that with prop drivers. Are the broach's cutting edges made from the intersection of radial and cylindrical surfaces or do you need to machine relief angles? Is the silver steel heat treated before use to cut aluminium?

                    Regards, Steve

I used a pointed tool to cut the various diameters so there is a very slight undercut on each. I did not harden it before trying in a test piece as I thought it would be easier if it needed altering but as it cut so well I continued as is. If I had a lot to do then I would cut a bit more clearance for the swarf ahead of each cutting edge and also harden it and see if I could find a press like Andrew's rather than hanging on the vice.

                      Gentlemen,

I cant get into my garage, I'm waiting for the delivery of a new door and mechanism, as its jammed shut but this afternoon, whilst sitting outside, I stripped an old microwave down to component parts, with basic tools I keep in the house, and now have a few micro switches, two motors one of which is synchronous, a fan assembly, mains filter, a diode and capacitor and a load of screws.

My wife sat and watched me occasionally muttering what are you going to do with it all and don't tell me it will be useful, the garage is already full of your useful stuff. She made me a nice cup of tea whilst doing this so cant really moan about her smiley

Having spent a lot of time running a programme on the CNC mill to machine a typical timing case cover for a large model I.C. engine and cut it in metal I decided, because it wasn't quite right to run the programme once more but using plastic supplied by Oompa Loompa (thank you kindly Graham).

Having knackered my last solid Carbide 1/4" cutter (Don't ask) I decided to use a 1/4" HSS cutter instead. This would have been OK if it was fresh out of the box but to be honest it was fit only for the bin. The cutter generated so much heat it melted it's way around the job. In desperation I switched on the coolant. This worked, however the resultant plastic porridge produced was a right mess so for the flip side I decided to revert back to dusty MDF.

Here are a couple of Blurry pictures of the end result. The results are good and everything seemed to work as it should.

re microwave dismantling. You get some very useful large circular magnets in the microwaves magnetron ( large lump with finned rod sticking out of it.

be warned however the magnets are apparently made with some unpleasant metals in them. If it cracks don't get dust / splinters in skin ( apparently quite toxic).

I found they work brilliantly inside a plastic drum as a swarf collector. handle through middle of magnet secured with UHU glue- cut hole in lid of plastic container. magnet in base of container- collects swarf, hold over bin, retract magnet further up container – swarf drops into bin!

Had a new 500 gallon parts washer delivered today.

Must have some serious pump in it as its rated at 10Kw

Don't think that will run off me extension lead ?

I would expect the pump to be rated about 2kW and the heater bank take the rest. I hope you haven't got a shilling in the slot eleky meter! 😊.

Yesterday I needed a simple switch to pop between a board and a 12V battery. Looked in the little draw marked switches and chose on of three old-fashioned push-buttons. I think I have probably been hoarding it since I was about 14, so maybe 38 years waiting for its time to come…

image.jpgI had a good day in the workshop today and it all happened before morning tea! I had intended to show a fellow model engineer how to make aluminium castings but unfortunately he couldn't come today. As I had already made some patterns for a 3 cylinder Atkinson engine I decided not to waste the day and any way I was keen to see if the patterns "worked". The photo shows the results – 3 forked connecting rods and 4 support legs. The cylinder block which is more complicated will be cast later. As we are now into winter the heat from the furnace was welcome.

Not really Ian, That bastard thing fights that hard 400 gallon goes over the side.

Two pumps at 1.5Kw for the jets either side and 1Kw for the circulation pump and heater block at 6Kw

According to the plate it needs a 45.5 amp supply, so that's two extension cables or three ?

It's not actually mine, my daughter has bought it to fit in her bit of the property, only problem is the house supply isn't big enough to run this, not sure but think it's 63 amp incoming and trying to get a cable back to the meter in the centre of the house is a major job so it will have to run off the workshop supply which won't be a problem as it's on three phase at 200 amp per phase.

Also be a quite easy job to run a 10mm armoured cable down to it. Next job is to prepare it's landing site then get a crane to lift it over the workshop and onto the launch pad.

Dismantled the magnetron today, will need to cut the metal work to remove the magnets, which are a nice size, a mate is coming round with an angle grinder so that I can open the garage door and get my Angle grinder out smiley
