      Hi Chaps,

My Wanner 300-4 oil gun, after 40 odd years of sterling service, has started leaking oil from its various orifices. I assume that a seal somewhere has perished. Before I start dismantling this rare and expensive beast, has anyone any experience of refurbishment? Please!

      TIA,

      Rod

          Rod,

This post on Australia's Woodworking forum should help.

            Andy,

Thanks, that's useful. Google didn't pick that one up!

            Cheers,

            Rod

Thanks to Andy's link I have been able to register with what is now the Metalworks forum in Oz and see some pictures **LINK** . This gave me some very useful tips. Here's what happened to me, my gun is subtly different to Anorak Bob's:

When I was using the gun oil was jetting out from between the larger and smaller black tubes as well as the brass tube interface.

              w1.jpg

The normal filler cap came off, the washer is rubbery seal

              w2.jpg

Inside the main body, the cup washer is prised out to reveal this fancy nut screwed to the end of the smaller black tube. I made a crude pin spanner. The pins have to be long to enable enough of the smaller black tube to be gripped.

              w4.jpg

              This is what comes out

              w5.jpg

The nozzle end now has to be unscrewed to allow the brass tube to be withdrawn

              w6.jpg

              w7.jpg

I've finally got to the problem – an O ring that has become hard and flattened. It was quite difficult to remove and I ended up digging it out with a scriber.

              w8.jpg

My small collection of O rings had something that looked suitable – this one is, as far as I can measure it, is 13mm OD x 1.8mm thick.

              w9.jpg

Reassembled and it all works, the oil goes where it should. The tapered end of the main barrel also unscrews, even though it is not knurled but, in retrospect, I do not think it is strictly necessary to remove this to change the seal

So, thanks to Andy Holdaway and Anorak Bob smiley. I hope this helps somebody else.

I have a Wanner grease gun, bought it brand new in my early days of motoring so must be about 55 years old. (cars had lots of grease nipples in those days!) Never done a thing to it as far as I can remember.

No idea how much I paid for it (how did I afford it come to that) must have been a genuine Wanner, I don't think far eastern fakes existed in those halcyon days.

Still using (not often now) a cheap side lever grease gun that I bought for 12/6 (62p) in North London, back in the very early 60s. It still functions well, despite having had at least 15lbs (7 Kg) of grease put through it. Think I got a bargain!

Still use, occasionally, a "bendy bar" 1/2" drive torque spanner, again, bought for 12/6, in the mid 60s. Amazingly, at every check, over the years, it is accurate, more than one supplied by one of the most revered names in hand tools!
