Wandess change gears

Hello to everyone

Some of you by now know that I'm the very happy owner of a wandess lathe. The artfull codger(Graham) has given me some really helpful information regarding this machine. My lathe only came with 5 of its original 14 change gears. With help from artfull I can confirm that the change gears are 20 dp. The question I have is if I remove the 20 dp gears entirely can I use a set of 1 mod gears in their place?

I have a complete set of unused 1 mod gears belonging to a Hafco 9×20 lathe and the range of these exactly match the range required for the wandess ie 30 teeth 35 teeth and so on. The bore diameter is slightly smaller but that can be made to fit the wandess. I have not and never will use these gears on the 9×20.

Am I correct in assuming that so long as the gear set is all the same and the tooth count identical that this would then turn the leadscrew just the same regardless of being 20dp or 1 mod or anything else in theory?

In the photo the smallest gear is 20dp as are the 3 below it. The gear behind the smallest is 18dp as are the ones above it (tumbler and spindle gear). I have done a search and can't find anything that matches my question if it has been covered before I apologise in advance.

I can't see any reason why not as long as they fit the shafts or can be adapted to fit, and you only mate 1 mod with 1 mod. 1 mod is 25.4 dp so the teeth will be finer and the gears smaller for a given ratio, so not quite as strong but that shouldn't matter, and the banjos may not give enough range for some of the ratios. Give it a whirl, I'd say.

Provided that you are only meshing like-with-like, and the [slightly smaller] Mod gears will mesh as a train on the banjo … all should be good.

Thank you gentlemen. Thats a win I think I only learnt the theory of dp and mod measurements today after artfull had it in his post. Its good when theory works in practice. I’ve never used my other lathe to cut threads or used the power feed. It has only ever been used to turn,face and bore. I am not a model maker instead my hobby is vintage engines and machinery and I now find that threading on the lathe is going to be a big advantage.

I hope you do not have a tumbler reversing arrangement. That might make things interesting, as might any other gear combinations with fixed distances between centres?

May I suggest that you re-read the opening post ?

There is a tumbler arrangement and it already has a different DP to the changewheels … ergo, it does not directly mesh with them.

There's no reason why you can't mix MOD and DP gears in the train, as long as only gears of matching size are asked to mesh with each other.
