Over 40yrs ago I seem to remember a tool called “a thread restorer”. Basically there were 3 rollers on a frame which you rolled round a damaged thread, and it pushed the metal back to where it had come from. As distinked from the usual way of running a die (or die nut) down the damaged section and removing the metal which is in the wrong place.

Have I dreamed this, because no one I speak to ever seems to have heard of them. I don’t think it had much use owing to the amount of space required round the damaged stud

Oh Jason You’ve stopped me believing I’m going mad. Or at least at a slower rate. Different design but the same basic principal. I seem to remember ours had a variety of rollers for different threads. As I say the big bug-bare was the amount of space required round the damaged stud

          Thanks Bob

Old style “split square” die sets in a sheet steel frame frequently included a single thread form roller running opposite a flat plane or plain V notch that could be used to repair damaged threads.

I have a set or two somewhere.

Those old style die sets are pretty effective thread repair devices if closed over the bottom end of the thread and run upwards. Running backwards effectively produces a negative rake on the cutting edges so pretty much no cutting. Given the age of these things odds are any found ones will be pretty blunt anyway so even going the right way they won’t be very effective at making a new thread.

Then there was the type us agricultural folk used, I have 2, one metric and one imperial. A section of square bar cut abit like a file there were 4 sizes on each end. Marvellous for taking burrs off when you beat the bolt out with a hammer. Mine were made by sykes – pickavant. Ah – the good old days ! Noel.

                Noel,

You are not alone in having various Thread Files, (Whitworth, BSF, Metric and Unified)

Mine even have a provision for internal threads!

Useful to clean up a bruised thread.

This is probably what you are remembering, taken from an Armours’ 1997 catalogue. Sadly they do not seem to be offering special tools anymore.

Am I asking too much to  hope for and internal thread restorer, specifically 3/8″ and 5/16″ ME threads in my boiler bushes, problems curing a couple of joint leaks has, I suspect, corroded the threads with too many acid cleans (I only use Citric acid)

Copious amounts of PTFE tape are required to seal the blanking plugs which is ok for the test but I understand tape is not recommended for sealing for running due to danger of bits clogging the injector.
