Thought there wasn't much difference in Oz, given the colour of the soil.

            Chaps,

I think I am seeing this differently. I agree that the price (£125ish) is over the top and if that is your main observation then I agree. I also agree that is should never have got into this condition in the first place. However, this vertical slide is a long way from the scrap bin. The slide and leadscrew look like they might be ok, The main body needs a clean and a repaint and the tee slotted slide needs the rust cleaned off.

Table looks well pitted to me. And the price is more than you can buy a pristine example in the UK and get it shipped out here to Oz for. I'm predicting zero offers on this one.

As I watch Circular sock machines, there was less than half of one on epay last week which was a laugh. Rusty, dirty, incomplete and even without a cylinder or any needles even. Sold for £67.

The purchaser cleaned it up and it is now relisted on epay for £200 (a couple of parts have been removed, as well!).

The cylinder, which sold separately for over a£100, plus £50 for needles would still only amount to half a machine if it were all put together.

This bloke could get a job writing scripts for the Comedy Roadshow.

                        Runs but belt is slipping

Apart from the chucks the lathe is not so rusty

The tools have got wet in the past though

But the lathe has been kept dry

Yes that is a sad thought when you see something like this. Once was somebody's pride and joy. Let go to ruin for want of a tarpaulin and or a spray of WD40 once a decade or so. LIke the thread on here recently about the beautifully made model IC engine someone found lying in a scrap heap on a nature strip. Some old boy's P&J taking, what, a thousand hours of work? Quite a few hundred at least anyway, just tossed out like scrap metal. Sad sad sad.

Sometimes it is the WD40 and tarp that are the cause of the problem when people do not realise they are both inadequate and appropriate for storing a machine. Even just the people who suggest a howling draught through their shed is going to be a solution to condensation.

The Boxford is nearly at £250 which is beyond my pocket money so I'll have to go for this one.

Still works and I still use it. Motor than can be seen in the B'ham science museum, not rusty, not come from a school etc so apparently absolutly worthless..

Neil,…there is a long history of making impromptu anvils from lumps of railway line…

Alexander G. Weyger's well known blacksmithing books feature instructions for how to make a very useful little anvil and the blade fanciers use this method a lot etc

However, in this case one detects 'a nice little earner' with attempts to add value with historical battlefield references etc….not bad to cut up scrap railway line and flog it off for near 20 quid a foot!

Hi, I saw that 10Kg anvil ad and thought it a bit steep for the price, plus the postage. you'd probably find a decent second hand anvil about that size for that money. As Bob has pointed out, nothing new about making them from railway lines and the ones in this country will be just as good as the piece in the ad. Here's my excuse for one **LINK** I made it from a brand new offcut back in the 80's when I had to cut some profiles on the ends of six rails for a new weighbridge.

I even made a small one weighing at about 1.4Kg from a bit of used narrow gauge line http://www.model-engineer.co.uk/albums/member_photo.asp?a=24798&p=742351

                                                      Regards Nick.
