Hi Folks, just got a late model Speed 10 from the 'new' Myfords in Yorkshire, can anyone tell me what size is the caphead screw that locks the bullwheel, and the size/thread of the gib adjusting screws on the topslide? It is a bit late to phone Myfords now, and I want to try and get hold of some tomorrow (Sunday). The existing ones have been damaged due to my ineptitude I'm afraid. Also, is a special allen key needed for the bullwheel, as there is very little room and a standard 1/8th key is too long to fit in the available space. Apart from that, it is an excellent little machine that has had very little use.

      Many thanks in advance,

      Nick

Hello Nick, for the back gear grind off an allen key so that you can get to the locking screw, make sure to tighten it whichever way you want when you use it. Then make a safe place for it on your tool rack. Do not grease the lathe, use oil in all the points, if you have ball bearing head stock then that is greased. Cant help with the screw sizes I am afraid. Do you have a hand book? Check to see if the mod. to the cross slide has been done where a couple of thrust bearing and a journal bearing have been fitted behind the operating handle, I can recommend this mod. If you have a vertical slide then mod. that spindle mount and just swap over.

Hi Clive, many thanks I will look tomorrow. I do have a manual, will that tell me if the mod has been done? If not, are the parts available?

              Regards,

              Nick.

                That looks good Nick

I had the (early) Ml10 for some years – and we had a lot of fun together! The Speed 10 is an improvement.

One very worthwhile job I made was to add a leadscrew clutch. I think this is ( was ?) available as an accessory but pretty easy to make up yourself.  It was particularly useful as the drive train can be disconnected to allow use of the handwheel on the end of the leadscrew to move the carriage. The tumbler reverse I purchased as a kit of parts.

The re- settable feedscrew dials were also purchased and made life easier.

                CROSS SLIDE DIAL

The one on the leadscrew I made- but as the dividing head I had access to could only give 124 divisions rather than 125 there was a small error ! ( It was never a problem wink )

                LEADSCREW DIAL

I hope you enjoy your machine – it is simple but capable ( far more capable than me I'm afraid! )

                Regards

                Norman

Hi Norman, many thanks for your reply, Ihe machine I have is a Speed 10 long bed, and came equiped with a leadscrew clutch and re setting dials, but not the tumbler reverse, however, it does have an electrical reverse, but a tumbler kit would be handy if I could find one. I am now awaiting the arrival of some castings for a marine engine for a future boat project, but in the 2 weeks I have had the machine, I have made a winch for the African Queen that I am in the process of finishing, here is a couple of photos of my efforts.

Nick, go to Arc euro trade and go down the list of headings to projects, there you will find the details of the mod. to the cross slide spindle. They can supply all the bearings and detail of how to do it.

Thanks Clive, I will look into that, are the feedscrews for thr Speed 10 the same as those for ML7 then?

They all seem to be the same except for length Nick. As I said before if you have a vertical table use that spindle carrier to mod. or buy a new one. You cannot do it if you remove the one already on the Speed 10.

It is an easy mod. all you need is jig plate and the bearings and it all works fine.

Hello Bri, combining the two is brilliant, I get to play with boats and steam engines at the same time…..

I have finally found out what threads are used on the bull wheel and the gib adjusters, they are 2BA, the backgear one being 2BA x 5/8th cap head screws and the gibs 2BA x 3/4 dog point set screws, all now ordered from Myfords at Mytholmroyd….
