      Hello fellow makers and tinkerers!

Tom here, I’m 27 from Scarborough and I’ve just recently got my life in order enough to have purchased my own single garage/workshop…with bungalow included (bonus)..I suppose One must ‘sleep, wash and eat’ from time to time…or so I’m told.

I’ve worked as a mechanical bias maintenance Engineer for a rather well known and ‘green’ international electrical company for the last 9 years, from being an apprentice to now one of the ‘senior’ and more well rounded engineers on site.

I’m in the slow process of turning my humble garage into the small workshop of my childhood dreams. I was always one of those children that took their brand new toys apart to see how they worked (much to my mothers frustration at the time), I can still remember my first micro screwdriver set bought for me as a gift. unfortunately it took a few years for me to figure out how to successfully put them back together again, but I’ve somehow managed to slip, trip, and fall into somehow making a career out of it…result.

I dabble in a few different avenues, mainly the automotive modification side these days (I have a couple of project cars on the go in my shared, rented car workshop in town). In recent years i have found myself repurposing a lot of ‘scrap’ machine components from my workplace (with permission of course) into reclaimed/industrial style furniture and ornaments (a fire pit and coffee table or two)…will upload photos to the thread in the future.

I’ll likely start a little thread for my workshop build and progress, it would be nice to see some small scale workshops from yourselves for inspiration!

This is my first time signing up to any forum like this, I’m excited to contribute where I can as a ‘Jack of all trades, master of none, but often better than a master of one’

      Signing out,

      TR

            Hi Tom,

            Welcome to the Forum.

Quite a few car enthusiasts on here.

If you have questions about setting up your workshop, just ask

Someone will have the answer (But you might well get conflicting advice, depending on personal prejudices/good / bad experiences)!

If that happens, you’ll have to decide who to follow, or take a vote

            Howard

Welcome from Driffield, not too far from “Scarbados”

Thanks for the welcoming comments gents!

I’m in the slightly ‘boring’ process of painting and prepping the walls of my workshop/garage before the more exciting work begins (fixed tooling, tool boards, lighting etc.), but ill be sure to post a nice little progress timeline thread for those interested when I get to the fun stuff.

I have managed to get my stainless steel U-shaped worktop made up though, which immediately made my garage look like a catering station… but I’m hoping that will change when I’m further along.

                  Welcome Tom!

I’m afraid I can only offer 1 bit of workshop advice – It isn’t big enough – it doesn’t matter how big it is it’s not big enough for all the ‘stuff’ you going to try to put in it.

                  Certainly my experience 😁🍻

                    Hi Tom,

Welcome aboard ! – Your childhood sounds pretty much identical to mine. As my wife says, I didn’t become an engineer….. I was born as one…..

                    Enjoy the journey.

I originally had a workshop in my parents garage working in freezing temperatures with sausage numb fingers was not good, and heat just makes the machinery sweat condensation. So, when I got my own house I made myself a deal that I would have an ‘indoor’ workroom. BEST life decision ever. So the light machines ( Mini Mill and Myford 7 ) and benches are indoors.

I still have the larger machines ( Colchester lathe and Bridgeport mill ) in a garage, and it’s protected with a ‘desiccant’ de-humidifier, second best decision ever…..

A wee view of the indoor workroom….. with the part built locomotive kind of filling the space.

                    All the best.
