Can someone measure how far is between the top of the compound slide and the centre height on their Myford lathe? I am going to be building a saddle for a 4" centre height ~mystery capstan lathe~ and need an idea of how high the slides should be.

I'm not sure, it might be different between S7 and ML7 and depend on age? Could do it tomorrow. (Will do it…)

Apparently the slides on the ML7 and pre power cross slide S7 were the same so I hope the overall height might be the same. If not then it would still be appreciated so I have a ballpark that I can shim up from if I have to.

Don't have an ML7 in front of me to measure but from memory, the base of the Myford 4-way toolpost is 3/8" thick and holds a 3/8 square tool bit at centre height. So the top of the topslide that the toolpost sits on must be/might be about 3/4" below centre height.

Also from memory, the height from the top of the cross slide to centre height is about 2-1/16".

That might be enough to get you started until someone with an ML7 and tape measure comes along.

I have a ML7 with a S7 cross slide fitted. From the top of the top slide to the centre of tailstock measures 5/8" if that helps.

Bed to top face of topslide on big bore S7 just measured as 72.75 mm, 2.865 inches. This is a pxf model with its standard topslide. Centre height is of course 3.5 inches, 88.9 mm.  And yes, the difference is 5/8 inches all but a gnats, as the previous poster measured.

                    Hi there, Rainbows,

                    This should help:

The 'top bit' is the Myford four-way tool-post.

                    Best regards,
