Since fitting the ER40 collet chuck to my Chester Crusader, I am thinking about removing the lead screw cover to allow me to get closer to the spindle.

Has anyone else done this and how much more travel will I gain?

I'm hopeful of getting an extra inch or so

      Thank you

      Jim

Just been and had a proper look, it looks like about 3" more travel

Yes similar lathe and done the same, even sliced the mounting brackets off very carefully with a thin slitting disk to save stripping the lathe down to give max travel.

Impossible to use the face plate with the springs fitted. Also took the other side guard off to get full travel in the tailstock direction.

Never owned a lathe before with leadscrew guards so they won't be missed by me.

              Likewise John!

Just been back in the shed and unwound the covers, like you say, saves pulling everything off!

I'll do the same trick with a dremel over the weekend.

Gained just over 2" of travel at the chuck.

After using the ER40 chuck for a few weeks, it had to be done!

              Thank you!

Different lathe but I just use plastic piping as a leadscrew cover

Split it along its length and slip it over the leadscrew

This keeps an awful lot of crap away from the leadscrew nut
