      Hello

I'm not new to the forum,it's just been some time scince I last posted anything. I'm building LBSCs victoria a Southern railway 0,4,4 roughly baced on a Billington D3 in 2.5 in gauge. I was wondering if anyone has built this loco as I've noticed that the rear bottom cylinder bolting holes are so close to the front axle that the cylinder block will foul the the front boxes. Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

I finished LBSCs Rose a couple of months ago,I'm very pleased with the finished loco and would like to hear from anybody else who has built rose as I've never seen another one and cannot find any photos on line.

      Regards

      Matt

            Hi Matt,

            Have look at this link to John "Baggo" Baguley's site – as this problem is known about;

            http://www.modeng.johnbaguley.info/locos/25inch/sr044t/sr440.htm

Mark Horowitz in the US had details of a 'Victoria' on his website but this site has now disappeared I'm afraid.

In terms of your 'Rose' – I don't think I've ever seen one in the flesh but a version was described as 'Wirral' in Peter Jones "Building Small Steam Locomotives" . Peter described how he built his version as a "Project in Overview" – effectively building on previous chapters that covered various other areas of small locomotive construction.

Your two engines are very nice small Gauge '3' locomotives and I'm sure you would be very welcome at G3 Society Get-Togethers, assuming you are not already a G3S member or in contact with them.

            Regards,

            IanT

P.S. Just checked my filing system and I have a copy of Marks article about the LBSC 0-4-4. If you'd like to see it, please PM me with your email address and I will forward a copy.

              Regards,

                Hi Matt,

Out of interest, which drawings are you using for Victoria?

I produced a set of CAD drawings which were based on an original set of blueprints by Donaldson and Piper. I've had a quick look and it looks as though there should be plenty of clearance between the axle box and the cylinder block. The flange on the axle box may come close to the cylinder end cover at the top of it's travel though.

I have got a set of original castings for Victoria myself but the build is on the 'roundtuit' list! Steve Eaton built a coal fired version some years ago which has hauled him around the Chesterfield club track. It needed a bit of help starting off but managed to get around without further assistance.

Marc Horowitz also built a Victoria to my CAD drawings. I asked him to let me know if he found any errors or problems but he didn't mention finding anything wrong (unless he didn't bother to tell me)

Re Rose – I have the original pencil drawings by LBSC which were kindy donated to the 2½" Gauge Association by a gentleman in the USA. They are a work of art and really nice to look at. They show that LBSC was much better at drawing than he made out in his articles. I've heard that he used to send some of his drawings to friends as gifts.

I've just had a look at the relevant page on my website and I did make a mistake in the position of the 4 holes for mounting the cylinder. The error was corrected in later versions of the drawings.

Having looked into it even further, it seems that although I sent an amended drawing to the person who was in charge of the N25GA drawings at the time, the sheet with the error may not have been replaced with the updated one and so we continued to sell the drawing with the error. blush I can only apologise to anyone who bought a set of the drawings. The drawings that I sent to Marc Horowitz were the updated ones which is why he never had a problem,

                    John

                      Hi John

Thanks for replying. I bought the drawings from the national 2.5 in association in May this year. I've only just noticed that it's your name on them. I've finished and assembled the frames with all the holes drilled and have started the cylinder block. There really doesn't look to be room for the axle boxes to move up and down when the cylinder block is in place. Could you possibly tell me what dimensions were alterd on the later drawings.

I take it that you have never seen Rose in the flesh, surely mine can't be the only one. I chose to build Rose as I found the original articles free to download on wwwjohntomsteam website and on studying them figgerd that I could make and fabricate everything but the wheels so the cost would be negligible, an important consideration with me being a half Scottish Yorkshireman. I would love to see it painted in GER ultramarine blue, but my painting skills, or lack of, would not do it justice so it will be unlined LNER black. Photos will follow soon.

                      Matt

                        Hi Matt,

Yes, I see that I did send you a set of drawings back in May,

On the original sheet 1 the position of the rear cylinder mounting holes was shown as 4-5/8" from the driving axle but this distance should have been 4-3/4". This moves the cylinder mounting holes 1/8" further forward.

                        enlarged part of sheet 1.jpg

I think there have been a few versions of Rose built but I don't have any photos of any of them unfortunately. Is yours the coal fired version or the meths fired?

                        John

                          Morning John

Your an early riser, thought I was bad for not being able to ley in bed on a Sunday morning. Rose is currently spirit fired, the coal fired boiler is under construction. I modified the tender design so it can hold both fuel type's, sacrificing some water space for the spirit tank under the coal space.

Ps thanks for the modified drawing, it's not a big problem to fill the holes and redrill them.

                            Matt
