      Hi There
I am looking for anyone who has a large collection of English Mechanics and Mechanics magazines.
LBSC published many of his designs in these magazines and I would like to obtain scans/photocopies and drawings of all of these locomotives with a view to ensuring they continue to survive.

I would like a set of drawings and scans/photocopies of Girton a gauge 1 locomotive published in English Mechanics in 1949.
Also, scans/photocopies of Bantam Cock from English Mechanics in 1945.

I have a complete set of drawings and photocopies of Roedean which I intend to publish in Model Engineer, they have only ever been published in English Mechanics.
      Comments are welcome.
      regards David

Not, I think, the same magazine. English Mechanic (no S) stopped publication in 1926.

I have a few, of these magazines dating from 1927, to 1949.’ Mechanics” incorporating English Mechanics & TheWorld of Science The Amateur Mechanic & Work. A record of scientific and mechanical invention, metalwork, woodwork, model engineering, wireless, electrical work, with practical articles on things to make. I have 6 from 1927, starting at February, March, April, May, June, July. Then June, and August 1937,August 1942, January 1943, February 1947, and August 1949. If what your looking for is in one of these, just let me know, and I’ll scan the article required.
Justhad another look at the titles, the 1927 ones are English & amateur Mechanics, 1937 to 1943 “Enlish Mechanics” and the last two just plain “mechanics”.
the ones from 1937 on have parts of articles by “LBSC”.
In the 1949 Mag Southern ‘Rodean’ in 3 1/2 in. Gauge, parts 60 to 63.
              Sorry rambling a bit, Ian S C

I am the publisher and person who scanned all the original English Mechanic magazines from 1895 to 1926. I have for the last four years been scanning the following issues, published as “Mechanics” through to 1956 and several changes of name, its a mamoth task over 1500 weekly issues. But its more than 80% complete, so I am sure I can provide all the LBSC articles you want, please get in touch, my email is bookman@rmplc.co.uk

My aim is to (hopefully if I can get permission) to be able to republish all the Mechanics up to 1956, in a low cost digitial version.

                Regards.

                  Hi David
Great to read the “Rodean” series as LBSC is always good to read. Would it be possible to reprint his ” Lobby Chats” as they always contained some good tips
                  Regards

I understand that someone published a list of all known LBSC designs. I’ll see if I can find the reference.

                        Hi Peter
The Lobby Chats have been in Model Engineer.
Roedean was in Mechanics so was never printed in Model Engineer.
                        regards David

Stick I am afraid the list you have given is not the full list. LBSC designed quite a few sub 2 ½” gauge locos. There was ‘BAT’, Sir Morris de Cowley, and ‘We Dot like Dorris’ to name but a few.

Old Curley designed many other things – these were usually published in time for Christmas. There was a steam fire engine for starters. If I can find the dratted things I will send them to David.

The steam fire engine plans were published in ME on 9th December 1954. The outline is probably based on the old Dennis-Merryweather or Shand Mason type machine. If it was intended that it should be made as a Christmas present the maker would have had to have pulled all the stops out as I have been making this model for a few months now, albeit with significant alteration eg gas firing and more detailed outline.

Thanks for that, I realised after I had posted the link that LBSC had more designs to his name.

Hi all — regarding the list of designs , there is a list in the book by Brian Holllingsworth ” LBSC,life & locomotives” which I think is pretty comprehensive.

Through the decades I have accumulated a lot of references about the SR 'Leader' class and this currently totals about 100.

The reference I mentioned had alluded me up to now.

Please have a look at this video on YouTube: IMLEC 97 – 5" Gauge Bulleid 'Leader' Class Locomotive

                                            Julian/Bob,

I have followed up your lead and have determined the following issues of ME are relevant:

                                            1. Vol 193 No 2569 17.08.1950 (drawing of 'Leader'

                                            2. Vol 183 No 4107 19.11.1999 (referring to above)

It took 49 years to result in a response !

Can you tell me if the loco as depicted in the first entry was an accurate depiction of the 'Leader' as built.

Bob, I use the local public library computer service so I do not know what the issue can be !

                                            Regards,
