how to fix on a traveling steady

Hi how d you fix on a travelling steady. I am not sure how they mount on to the slide or which one to buy. Can anyone help please?

Most are specific to one particular lathe so will have holes to match those in the carrage, what lathe do you have?

It has to fit on the carriage, not the slide so that it doesn't move when you put on more cut. Use Google Images to see a variety. The early Drummond ones were a bit weird with a big hole in the middle to let the slide move through the middle. Then there are the ones that are on a long flat base eg for the Smart and Brown which are designed to fit to the long wings of the saddle. Your best bet is something like the standard Boxford mounting.

However you can be a bit different and swing the topslide round to use as a cross-slide and mount it on the T-slitted cross-slide.

Its a drummond 3.5 but its been modded before i got it and am happy to mod something to fit . I did try google but was amazed how many there are of different sizes and types.

Woud this need two holes drilled and tapped after centering the travelling slide

This looks like a Boxford travelling steady, which is for (probably) a 4½" centre height. Mounted on the rear of the cross-slide on bolts through the slots in it.

If you have not done so, first check that the centre height will match the height of your Drummond .

The steady is the same as on my 9" Southbend. It bolts to the rear of the saddle.

Yes deffo a Boxford steady. The Boxford steadies do mount to the RH side of the saddle and are cranked inwards towards the chuck/cutter position. Other lathes also use the LH side of the saddle.

Martin,

Holes for bolts are about 7/8" deep. The Southbend was the original American design and was made by Boxford in UK and by Hercus in Australia. Parts made for Hercus are interchangeable with the Southbend (not sure about Boxford). The standard bed on the Hercus is 3" longer than the Southbend, a feature that I would like on mine. They also made an extra long bed but they are as scarce as "hen's teeth".
