HELP in constructing 5 inch gauge points

Hello I'm hoping to construct 5 inch gauge points using 16mm aluminium rail any information on how to construct them and the methods used will be very useful.

I would have thought that the garden railway people should have an answer.

Hello David. I have just started building a 5 & 3 1/2 inch gauge point, I am using Doug Hewson s articles from Engineering in Minature volume 12 no 4 & 5. These articles are for 5inch only so I am adding the 3 1/2 rail and hoping all goes well. Unfortunatly I have mislayed the original mags but I have copies, if you would like copies of my copies please p.m. me.

In the St Albans MES newsletter last week we had an article by a club member building a point in allow rail. I will drop him a mail tomorrow to see if he can help you.
If you are near Exeter then EDMES have built a couple mixed 7 & 5 in in steel. There are pictures on their Facbook pages.

Well, I do have a method for G3 turnouts but perhaps the EIM article will be more appropriate for David's needs.

Anyway – I use paper templates generated by a programme called Templot2 – that I purchased many years ago. I will admit I never got to grips with using it to design the whole track – but selecting turnout types and radii is a very simple job and can be used to generate overlapping PDFs for print-out. Once you've got a template to work to – it's pretty straight forward to lay sleepers and rail on top.

Didn't Martin Evans do a series on garden layouts one of which included points I seem to remember. Model Engineer Volume 223 somewhere either side of issue 4620 ish. I'll let you plough through the archive.

Brian H thank you for your feedback and I agree with you I was hoping for better response it would be nice to hear from a person or persons who has built points in aluminium for tips on what to do and in my mind just importantly things to avoid things I've learned the hard way save me doing the same thing. Thank you very much.

Paul Rushmer thank you for your feedback I have come across the existence of Dennis Monk work on this subject but I failed to get back issues but I did find drawings covering this topic from Dennis Monk I have not received them yet so can't comment on the suitability. I would concur with Ian T, Templot would be the first step for me, I have used it for smaller scales and it's superb, you can scale it to any size. If using the template which makes life very easy you'll, of course, need to find a printer able to print to the size required or perhaps make it up out of a lot of A4 pages. Not how sure how feasible that is but I would think it doable. Templot can be found free online, there is also a forum to help with questions.

The owner of Station Road Steam used to keep a build history of his garden railway on the web site, updates stopped before it was finished if indeed it ever was. They sometimes sell sleepers and rail.

I suspect you may be looking for that literally one in a million other person who has the space, money and drive to complete his own.

The finescale railway modelers, EM & P4, will have a lot of useful info online which will scale up – in terms of the mechanics of the thing, what all the parts are called , what part is cut at what angle, what is joggled etc.
