I know this thread is 2 years old:

      BUT

someone on Youtube mentioned to me that
"..a fellow did an article several years back, that detailed putitng a DRO scale hidden inside the cross slide.."
I was wondeing if Alan Jackson was the author. No one seened to know exactly which issue (or even what year!)
so I looked through the index and Alans cross slide (#219) article seem to ba a candidate.
Does anyone know the article I'm talking about?
I want to place a Renishaw magnetic DRO scale inside of my cross slide on a South Bend 9A which is about the same size as a Myford 7.
This saves a lot of room where one wants to slide the tailstock slide up close to the saddle/cross slide.

But what issue of MEW was that in? I want to see how he did it.

I don't think it was ever in ME or MEW.

I suggest you find one of KWIL's posts and send hima pm.

There was one in MEW when Dave Clark was editor to give an idea of time scale.
Not a good article as it never said what was fitted or even showed a picture. It was like half the article was missing or the second instalment was never published but it didn't say to be continued.

                Really weird article.

I did this on a Myford speed 10 a couple of years ago and it is still going well. I have some pictures in my albums.

Actually I'm going to start a separate thread for this. I don't want this to clog up Alan's thread with a tangential topic and basically hijacking anyway (I myself am displeased with hijacking as a general rule). I should have thought of that from the beginning. Duh! Sorry. So if everyone could move over to my new thread concerning this ( to be posted later today) I would be most obliged. I'll title it something like "Locate DRO Scale Inside Cross Slide" for lack of a better title. Thanks everyone.

No wonder I couldn't find it, surname spelled name wrong… and it isn't in the index with or without the mis-spelling!

Is there a quick way of seeing KWIL's photos? I have tried randomly opening posts in an attempt to find his profile etc without success.

I have a feeling that this is a dumb question.

No easy way to find them apart from searching about for one of his posts, luckily I have a few PMs from him in my messages so can get to it quickly from there. Using the search on the home page and searching his name will throw up his posts from where you can get to his photos.

MEW 150 was in May 2009. Note your first post mentioned DRO in the Cross-slide, whereas KWIL put it in the Topslide.

The article will not assist Cabbage Stack in any way in fitting a magnetic strip DRO, the problems and sizes are so much different.

                                                Neil,

A full writeup would not help, the electronics used are no longer available and require access to board level dimensions. It was a tight packaging job within the constraints of the "standard" Myford dimensions.

Different dimensions of another DRO system and lathe manufacturer will bring its own unique criteria and problems.

As the OP started out regarding the Cross slide, with a magnetic strip on the side of the slide and a read head towards the rear, tailstock approach problems will be relatively non existant.

Strange in that even if it was not intended as a how to, you showed virtually every detail and part but not the scale used or even the make.

Even if it were a special or non obtainable [ not mentioned ] it would have given other readers an insight in case they wanted to go this route.

OK John, as seen at MEX, clearly Microsyn by Newall. See second post by JasonB in this thread.

Not obtainable subsequent to fitting due to head design changes.
