I recently picked up this Die Filer branded Excel Made in England. There is no oil in the sump just a bit of what looks like black grease. I have a sneaking suspicion that it was once the oil. So it must have been sitting idle a long time. So i’ll Have to crack it open and clean it out.

There is a small hole about half way along the top of the over arm which i’m Stumped as to it’s purpose.

There is also a hole in the cast base between the filer and motor which has a machines surface. Again don’t know what for?

The Vee belt is too big even with the motor slide across to it’s maximum tension, I don;t think it could ever have run the machine but has been there a long time.

The hole in the boss on the overarm is put there to keep you guessing. laugh and thinking there is a special fixture that uses it. Actually it is there directly opposite the shaft by which the arm is mounted and was used to turn said shaft between centres. In other words entirely a manufacturing fixture.
The arm you have is the saw arm. The spring keeps the tension on the blade. The filing hold down is different.

The design was made by a number of firms with their own name cast in. In the USA often known as the 'Butterfly' which may help your searches.

idea Now that we have high power LEDs available, it would a good place to mount a work-light.

I used the hole in the base to secure it to the bench.

The hole in the base is for a holding down bolt to secure it to the bench. As bolts at each corner are not feasible with the design and the machine is only for light weight use a single bolt into the bench will suffice.
                Regards Mick.

Bazyle, it seems so obvious once you point it out.

Thanks tractor man. For the bolt hole info.

seems the over arm I have is for saw blades and the roller arm is for filing. Looks like something else for theto do list is to make up something to work as the roller arm.
