Hi, I recently bought a quantity of Silver solder that came along with several boxes of " Eutecrod 1600FC " flux coated "silver bearing" 3/32" rods. I like to know what I'm using and have been unable to find anything out regarding these rods. Not surprising given the phone number on the boxes is " Feltham 6571". While the flux coating is in a pretty poor state, I did try one on a piece of copper using just a Primus 2000 propane torch and it flowed beautifully. Any information regarding the content / use for, these rods would be welcome, Thanks.

Couldn't find the 1600FC but find lots of others. Maybe a call to the supplier is in order..

One description was talking about annealing at 1600°F – coincidence perhaps?

Eutecrod is/was a tradename used by Castolin/Eutectic Company.

1600 is described on page 72 of their data book as a high temperature, wide melting range, low silver content alloy. This book came into my posession in the early 70's when I worked for Johnson Matthey.

The information indicates to me that it is an alloy that cannot be neither sold legally nor "placed on the market" (ie given away) legally..

I would not expect it to have the brazing characteristics you have described. It doesn't do what it says on the tin!

Leave it with you. You seem to have bought a "pig in a poke!" Worse case scenario is that it could shorten your life expectancy.

            Bargain?

            Regards

            Keith

Thank you Brian, That’s what I found, just about everything but the one you want. As is the way with these things, after posting on here I found this on ebay ” EUTECTIC WELDING ALLOYS LTD NORTH FELTHAM WELDING ALLOYS PRODUCT CATALOGUE c1960 ” This shows the 1600 as a ” Special Silver Alloy ” Rod having a ” Medium to low melting ” range. The search continues. Thanks again for your reply.

Hi Keith, Hmmm, stranger and stranger. The quality of the company literature doesn’t seem to match that of their product by the looks of it.In 1970 I had just come out of my time and I’ve used the odd rod or two since then, fear not, I shall take care. Thanks for taking the time to give what information you have.
