Im thinking of buying a set of collets but unsure of whether I need a lathe collet chuck ( which seems to make sence to me ) or one with a taper for the headstock shaft ? Its for use on 7 x 14 mini lathe.

Are the taper ones for mills only? is one better than the other?

sorry if the question is a bit dumb

      Thanks , Bob

          Hi Packmule

If you use a backplate holder you can put bar right through.

Use a taper one and the drawbar gets in the way.

          regards David

Bob…there is a lot of overhang if the taper type is used in the lathe.

              Bob,

I was given a set of ER32 collets, I looked at making a back plate for my Clarke CL500M but then decided to use a taper chuck similar to your description and then made a draw bar for the lathe. I dont make long parts so it suits me.

I'm currently considering the same. I was kind of leaning towards a chuck with 3MT to fit the taper in the headstock. My thinking being that this would be more flexible if I changed machines at some time. I had not considered David's point , with a back plate holder I will be able to use it to hold small stock as well as milling cutters. Now leaning the other way ……………. Thanks David

Now to give the card a pasting . ……lol
