        LOCATION: Auckland, New Zealand

        LATHE: Maximat V10P (Metric). S/No. C 7404311.

I had just finished boring an opening in 3mm plate and was about to de-burr when I got a sound as if something was winding up and releasing with a spring like effect. My Initial reaction something had got caught in the drive belt. Not so.

I then checked the head stock gears, and all was OK.

While I had not been using the automatic feed, drive was going to the Norton Gear box via the reversing gears. Putting the reversing gears in neutral, enabled the chuck to be freely turned by hand. On further investigation the problem was located in the change speed gear lever and gears of the gearbox.

I suspect that either the ball races or needle rollers have collapsed.

Has anyone had any experience with the Metric Norton gearbox (its detail differs between it, and the Imperial version). Can this lever and shaft be removed without removing the gearbox? It is not absolutely clear from the parts diagram. Has anyone had any experience of what procedure is needed?

Also does anybody have a wiring diagram for the 5 button electrical box? I would just like to have one on hand as I have to re-cable the milling head.

          Hi Neil,

There is a emcoV10lathe group at groups.io that may give you more information.

            Hi Neil,

I used to have an EMCO V10P and foolishly sold it when I had problems with the headstock gears. Instead of paying to get them fixed I sold the EMCO and bought a Seig SC4 which I have regretted ever since.

I'm not sure about the gearbox, but when I first bought the Emco, I disconnected the wires from the 5 button electrical box without properly documenting where everything went and then couldn't put it back together again. I took the lathe motor and the box into work and showed it to the sparky who couldn't work it out and sent it out to a specialist motor guy who connected it up for me. I never did get the mill motor reconnected – instead I used a separate switch with a capacitor mounted on the wall behind the lathe.

Here is a link to the V10P manual which has a basic wiring diagram on the last page.

Good luck with it – it didn't help me much.

            Regards,

            Alan

Thanks Thor and Alan, I will endeavour to join the Emco users group.

At the present I cannot connect to the "elcompty" site but will try again. At this stage the electrical diagram was only to future proof my info on the V10P.

On further investigation it may be the transfer gears from the Norton box to the lead screw and the feed shaft may be where the problem lies.

              Regards.

              Neil.
