Would anyone know the accurate weight for an elliot 10m shaper ? I have checked lathes.co.uk but cannot see one.

I would also add that the machine is lethally top heavy if you move it about, slinging should be done with a strop around both ends of the ram with the rear extension guard removed.

The handbook quotes an all up weight at 1008 lbs [nearly 459kg]

I've got one and have moved it around the garage using a 1 tonne folding crane but soon it will have to be relocated to its new home in the workshop in the back garden

The ram can be removed and the shaper unit from the base to separate into three pieces to help with moving it about

The manual is a god send although IIRC the NEMES one is a bit fuzzy

Thanks for the replies everyone. The weight is roughly what i was expecting, not too heavy but as some have said they are top heavy. I don't have the machine yet, but want to buy one, even though i know they are obsolete really. But as a machine they have always interested me.

Hello Ronan,

You can do things with a shaper that nothing else will handle, it needs a bit of imagination, but cutting a keyway into a blind hole is just one use..

Roughing down castings prior to finishing on a mill is handy, although a shaper in good condition can skim off to a decent finish in 1-2 thou cuts. Obselete perhaps, but still useful.

Tooling is easy too, just use big lathe tools.

It's surprising what a Shaper can achieve, dovetails with cheap tooling being one for certain., keyways have already been mentioned and you also have internal splines and internal gears.

The late Rudy Kouhoupt did a couple of Shaper videos which are still available from Camden Miniatures quite interesting IMHO.

I have wanted a shaper for ages,whenever one comes up for sale I always end up at back of queue so have started building one for myself, the motor is from an ex floor polisher stacks of torque but best of all is geared down to 388 Rpm, I'll take some pics and post at a later date–here is a pic of my lathe which I shall put on a new thread as l am not sure what the make is and need some advice–Mick

Hello. I have recently acquired an Ellison 10m shaper. I can't see that I will use the machine (it came as part of a collection) and wondered if any one on this forum would be interested in it. I had a 10M some years ago and transported it in a small car trailer.

I can confirm what Brian says about 'top heavy'. I had to strap it down very firmly. Thereafter making sure the tyres were inflated to 45PSI and taking great care over uneven ground and round bends.

Definately not a load to take liberties with.

I eventually sold my 10M as Id dint seem to use it very often.

My main use was preparing iron castings and removal of large chunks of metal before finishing with my (small) mill.

As commeted above the simplicity and easy of sharpening tool bits was its greatest asset for me.

Clamping could be a challenge as if the work can move it will.

Very useful machines; I used to have an Eliott 10M. I only got rid of it because I was moving back to England from Portugal, and I had nowhere to keep it.

I sold it to a local mechanic. Most Portuguese are short, but this guy was a giant. I'm 6' 3" and he towered over me.

I went to start my lorry so we could use the crane to lift the shaper onto his trailer.

"Não precisa" (No need) he said, picked it up in a sort of bear hug, carried it over to the trailer and plonked it on. Cranes are for wimps.
